Radio/Head Unit

Remove and replace the factory radio/head unit in a 2008 Dodge Viper, including removal of center console trim and disconnection of antenna and wiring harnesses.

Preparation

Procedure

   Remove climate control trim bezel
   The radio is integrated into the center stack with the climate controls. Start by removing the climate control/radio trim bezel. Insert a trim panel removal tool at the bottom edge of the bezel surrounding the climate controls and radio. Gently pry outward to release the retaining clips along the perimeter.    Disconnect climate control connectors if necessary
   Depending on the bezel design, you may need to disconnect electrical connectors for climate control buttons or switches integrated into the trim.    Remove radio mounting fasteners
   With the trim bezel removed, locate the radio mounting screws. Remove the screws securing the radio chassis to the dash bracket (verify exact count, type, and location against factory service documentation before removal). These are typically located on the outer edges of the radio face.

   Pull radio unit forward
   Carefully pull the radio unit straight out from the dash opening. You will need approximately 4-6 inches of clearance to access the rear connectors. Support the unit with one hand while working on the connections with the other.

   Disconnect antenna cable
   Locate the antenna cable connected to the rear of the radio. This is typically a black coaxial cable with a push-on connector. Grasp the connector body (not the cable) and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not twist or bend the cable excessively.

   Disconnect main wiring harness
   Locate the main wiring harness connector(s) at the rear of the radio. Press the locking tab or release mechanism and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. Some units may have multiple connectors for power, speakers, and auxiliary inputs.

   Remove factory radio
   With all connections disconnected, remove the factory radio unit completely from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting brackets and wiring for any damage.

   Prepare new head unit
   If installing an aftermarket head unit, attach the wiring harness adapter to the new unit according to the adapter manufacturer's instructions. Connect the antenna adapter if required. If installing an OEM replacement unit, proceed directly to installation.

   Connect new head unit wiring
   Position the new head unit near the dash opening. Connect the main wiring harness to the radio. If using an adapter harness, connect the vehicle-side harness to the adapter. Ensure all connections are fully seated and locking tabs engage with an audible click.

    Connect antenna cable
    Connect the antenna cable to the new head unit. Push the connector straight onto the antenna input until it seats firmly. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it is secured.

    Test new head unit function
    Before securing the unit, reconnect the negative battery terminal temporarily and turn the ignition to the accessory position. Test all radio functions including AM/FM reception, power, volume, and any auxiliary inputs. Verify proper speaker output from all channels. If issues are found, check all connections. Once verified, disconnect the battery again before proceeding.

    Install and secure new head unit
    Carefully push the new head unit into the dash opening, guiding all wiring behind the unit. Align the mounting holes with the dash bracket. Install the 4 Phillips head mounting screws and tighten securely, but do not overtighten as this can crack the radio chassis.

    Reinstall climate control trim bezel
    If climate control connectors were disconnected, reconnect them now. Position the trim bezel over the radio and climate controls, aligning all clips with their receptacles in the dash. Starting at one corner, firmly press the bezel into place, working around the perimeter until all clips are fully seated. You should hear or feel each clip snap into place.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect negative battery terminal and tighten securely
2. Start vehicle and verify radio retains all settings and functions properly
3. Check that all climate control functions still operate correctly
4. Inspect trim bezel fitment to ensure all clips are properly engaged with no gaps

Verification

• Turn ignition to accessory position and verify head unit powers on
• Test AM and FM radio reception across multiple stations
• Verify audio output from all speakers (front left/right, rear left/right if equipped)
• Test volume and tone controls for proper operation
• If equipped, test CD player, auxiliary input, or other media functions
• Confirm clock and presets are functioning
• Verify no rattles or loose trim panels when driving
