Procedure to remove and replace seat belt assembly (buckle, retractor, and anchor points) on a 2008 Dodge Viper.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes to ensure airbag system is fully discharged.
3. Photograph or note seat belt routing through B-pillar trim and seat mounting points for reference during reinstallation.

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove B-pillar lower trim panel
   Carefully remove the rear quarter/seat-back trim panel behind the seat to access the seat belt retractor. Remove any Torx screws first, then release retaining clips. Consult the factory service manual for exact fastener locations, as the Viper does not use a conventional B-pillar trim stack.

   Remove B-pillar upper trim panel
   Access the upper seat belt guide/anchor located in the rear roof-rail or quarter panel area behind the seat. Remove the applicable trim panel per the factory service manual; the Viper does not have a conventional upper B-pillar trim panel.

   Remove seat belt upper anchor bolt
   Locate the upper seat belt anchor bolt at the roof-rail/rear quarter area. This is a high-strength bolt securing the belt through a reinforced mounting bracket. Remove the upper anchor bolt completely and note its length and thread engagement for reinstallation.

   Remove seat belt buckle assembly
   Locate the seat belt buckle mounting bolt at the inboard side of the seat, mounted to the transmission tunnel or seat frame. Remove the buckle mounting bolt and withdraw the buckle assembly. Note the position of any washers or spacers.

   Remove seat belt retractor assembly
   Locate the seat belt retractor mounting bolt(s) on the rear quarter/roof-rail structure behind the seat. Most retractors use a single primary mounting bolt through the retractor body; verify the exact count and location against the factory service manual. Support the retractor assembly and remove the mounting fastener(s). Carefully control the belt webbing as you remove the retractor to prevent damage.

   Remove seat belt from vehicle
   Guide the seat belt webbing back through the B-pillar trim routing guides and any seat-mounted guide loops. Remove the complete seat belt assembly from the vehicle. Inspect mounting points for damage, corrosion, or elongated bolt holes that would indicate structural damage requiring additional repair.

   Install new seat belt retractor
   Position the new seat belt retractor in the rear quarter/roof-rail mounting location. Align the retractor mounting hole(s) with the body bracket and install the mounting fastener(s) per the factory service manual. Do not fully tighten at this stage. Ensure the retractor mechanism operates freely and the webbing feeds smoothly.

   Route seat belt webbing
   Route the seat belt webbing through the B-pillar guides and any seat-mounted guide loops following the routing documented during disassembly. Ensure the webbing is not twisted and follows the factory path through all trim openings.

   Install seat belt upper anchor
   Position the seat belt upper anchor at the B-pillar or roof rail mounting point. Install the upper anchor bolt and tighten to the manufacturer-specified torque value. This is a critical safety fastener requiring precise torque.

    Install seat belt buckle
    Position the seat belt buckle at the inboard seat mounting location. Install the buckle mounting bolt with any original washers or spacers in the correct sequence. Tighten the buckle bolt to the manufacturer-specified torque value.

    Torque retractor mounting bolts
    Return to the seat belt retractor and torque the retractor mounting fastener(s) to the manufacturer-specified torque value per the factory service manual. Verify the retractor operates correctly and the webbing extends and retracts smoothly without binding.

    Reinstall B-pillar trim panels
    Reinstall the upper B-pillar trim panel, ensuring the seat belt webbing routes correctly through any trim openings and the panel clips engage fully. Install the lower B-pillar trim panel, verifying all clips are properly seated and the panel sits flush with surrounding trim.
13. 13

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Cycle the ignition to ON without starting the engine and verify no airbag warning lights remain illuminated after the system self-test completes. Test seat belt operation through full extension and retraction cycles.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all seat belt mounting bolts are torqued to specification—these are critical safety fasteners.
2. Verify seat belt webbing is not twisted and routes correctly through all guides and trim panels.
3. Confirm seat belt buckle latches and releases properly with audible click.

Verification

• Pull seat belt to full extension and verify smooth operation without binding or unusual noise from retractor.
• Verify seat belt buckle latches securely with audible click and releases properly when button is pressed.
• Confirm no airbag warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster after battery reconnection and system self-test.
• Perform a sharp pull test on the webbing to confirm retractor locks properly during sudden movements.
• Verify all B-pillar trim panels are secure with no rattles or gaps.
