Shifter Boot

Replace the shifter boot on a 2008 Dodge Viper with manual transmission by removing the center console trim and accessing the boot retaining ring.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn off ignition and remove key
3. Allow interior components to cool if vehicle was recently driven (shift knob may be warm)

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove shift knob
   Check for any set screw or jam nut securing the shift knob before unscrewing. The knob typically threads (right-hand) counterclockwise off the shifter shaft. Remove the knob completely and set aside.

   Remove center console trim bezel
   Locate and remove the Torx fasteners securing the center console trim bezel around the shifter. Verify the exact count and size of Torx fasteners securing the center console trim bezel against the factory service manual before proceeding, as this could not be confirmed for the 2008 Viper. Carefully lift the bezel up and away from the console base once fasteners are removed.

   Access shifter boot base
   With the trim bezel removed, the shifter boot and its mounting location are now visible. The boot is secured to the console floor with a retaining ring or clip mechanism at its base.

   Release boot retaining ring
   Locate the plastic or metal retaining ring that secures the bottom of the shifter boot to the console. This ring typically has tabs or a snap-fit design. Use a flat-head screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry the retaining ring upward and out of its groove, working around the perimeter until the ring is free.

   Remove old shifter boot
   Once the retaining ring is released, pull the boot assembly upward and off the shifter shaft. The boot may have an upper collar that slides over the shaft. Inspect the boot for tears, cracking, or damage to confirm replacement is needed.

   Install new shifter boot
   Slide the new shifter boot over the shifter shaft from the top, ensuring the boot is oriented correctly with the wider opening at the bottom. Position the boot so the lower edge aligns with the mounting groove in the console floor.

   Secure boot with retaining ring
   Press the retaining ring down into the groove around the base of the boot, working around the perimeter to ensure all tabs or clips engage fully. The ring should sit flush and hold the boot securely in place without gaps.

   Reinstall center console trim bezel
   Position the trim bezel over the shifter and align it with the console base. Press down gently to seat any alignment pins or clips. Reinstall the T20 Torx screws at the fastener locations and tighten securely, but do not overtighten plastic components.

   Reinstall shift knob
   Thread the shift knob clockwise onto the shifter shaft. Tighten by hand until snug, ensuring the knob is oriented correctly and sits at the proper height for comfortable shifting.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trim panels are seated properly with no gaps or misalignment
2. Verify all fasteners are reinstalled and tightened
3. Check that the shift knob is secure and at the correct height

Verification

• Move the shift lever through all gears to confirm full range of motion without interference
• Visually inspect the boot for proper seating and no bunching or binding during shifts
• Confirm the boot moves smoothly with the shifter and returns to center position
• Check that all trim pieces are secure with no rattles or loose components
