Shifter Knob

Remove and replace the manual transmission shifter knob on a 2008 Dodge Viper with 8.4L V10 engine.

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on level ground and engage the parking brake
2. Allow the shifter knob and surrounding console area to cool if the vehicle has been recently operated

Procedure

   Identify shifter knob attachment method
   Examine the base of the shifter knob where it meets the shift lever boot. The 2008 Viper uses a threaded shifter knob that screws onto the shift lever shaft, typically secured by a jam nut or lock ring at the base. Inspect for a locking collar before removal.

   Remove the factory shifter knob
   First loosen any jam nut or lock ring at the base of the knob. Grasp the shifter knob firmly, wrapping a shop towel around it for improved grip if needed, and unscrew it counterclockwise (right-hand thread) from the shift lever shaft. Turn steadily until the knob threads off completely.

   Inspect the shift lever shaft
   Once the knob is removed, examine the exposed threaded shift lever shaft for any residual thread-locker, dirt, or damaged threads. Clean the threads with a shop towel if necessary. The threads should be intact and undamaged. Check that the rubber shift boot is not torn or displaced during knob removal.

   Prepare the new shifter knob
   Inspect the interior bore of the new shifter knob to ensure it is clean and free of debris. Verify that the knob's internal thread size and pitch match the shift lever shaft. If installing an aftermarket knob, confirm it is compatible with the Viper's shift lever thread specification and boot configuration.

   Install the new shifter knob
   Thread the new shifter knob clockwise onto the shift lever shaft by hand until snug, then rotate to orient the shift pattern indicator or logo (if present) toward the driver. Secure the position with the jam nut or lock ring so the knob sits properly relative to the shift boot trim ring with no gap.

   Verify shifter knob security
   Confirm the knob is fully threaded on and the jam nut or lock ring is tightened so the knob cannot rotate or loosen. There should be no rotational movement or vertical play. Cycle through all gear positions to ensure the knob does not interfere with console trim or shift boot operation.

Reassembly

1. No additional reassembly required beyond installing the new shifter knob

Verification

• Confirm the shifter knob is firmly attached with no rotational or vertical movement
• Verify smooth shifting through all gear positions without interference
• Check that the shift boot sits properly around the base of the knob with no binding or displacement
