TPMS Relearn

This procedure relearns the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors on a 2008 Dodge Viper after tire rotation, sensor replacement, or loss of sensor communication.

Preparation

1. Ensure all four tires are inflated to the correct pressure specification found on the driver door jamb placard (typically 29 PSI front, 29 PSI rear cold).
2. Verify that all TPMS sensors are functioning by checking for valve stem condition and that no sensors have been physically damaged.
3. Park the vehicle on level ground in an area with minimal radio frequency interference.
4. Turn the ignition to the OFF position.

Procedure

1. 1

   Verify tire pressures
   Use a tire pressure gauge to verify all four tires are inflated to the specification on the door jamb placard. Adjust pressures as needed. The TPMS system will not relearn properly if tire pressures are significantly incorrect.

   Connect scan tool
   Connect a TPMS-capable scan tool to the OBD-II diagnostic port located under the driver side of the dashboard, to the left of the steering column.

   Turn ignition on
   Turn the ignition key to the ON/RUN position without starting the engine. Do not start the engine during the relearn procedure.

   Access TPMS relearn function
   Using the scan tool, navigate to the TPMS or tire pressure monitor menu. Select the TPMS relearn, sensor ID learn, or similar function. The exact menu path varies by scan tool manufacturer, but typically follows: Vehicle > Body > TPMS > Relearn Sensors.

   Initiate relearn mode
   Follow the scan tool prompts to place the vehicle's TPMS system into relearn mode via the appropriate Chrysler control module (e.g., the wireless control/body module). Verify the correct relearn method for this vehicle, as some Chrysler TPMS systems require entering sensor IDs through the diagnostic system rather than a trigger-based relearn. You should receive confirmation on the scan tool screen that relearn mode is active.

   Activate left front sensor
   Using the TPMS scan tool's sensor activation function, hold the tool's antenna near the left front tire's valve stem. Activate the sensor by triggering it with the scan tool. The sensor will transmit its unique ID to the receiver module. Wait for confirmation on the scan tool that the sensor ID has been received and learned. This typically takes 5-10 seconds per sensor.

   Activate right front sensor
   Move to the right front tire and repeat the activation process. Hold the scan tool near the valve stem, activate the sensor, and wait for confirmation that the sensor ID has been learned.

   Activate right rear sensor
   Move to the right rear tire and repeat the activation process. Hold the scan tool near the valve stem, activate the sensor, and wait for confirmation that the sensor ID has been learned.

   Activate left rear sensor
   Move to the left rear tire and repeat the activation process. Hold the scan tool near the valve stem, activate the sensor, and wait for confirmation that the sensor ID has been learned. This completes the sensor relearn sequence.

    Exit relearn mode
    Once all four sensors have been learned, the scan tool will typically exit relearn mode automatically or prompt you to complete the process. Follow any remaining scan tool prompts to finalize the relearn procedure and exit the TPMS menu.

    Cycle ignition
    Turn the ignition OFF, then back ON. The TPMS warning light on the instrument cluster should illuminate briefly during bulb check, then extinguish within a few seconds if the relearn was successful.

    Test drive vehicle
    Drive the vehicle for 5-10 minutes at speeds above 20 mph to allow the TPMS system to fully initialize and verify communication with all sensors. Monitor the instrument cluster to ensure the TPMS warning light does not illuminate during or after the drive.

Reassembly

1. Disconnect the scan tool from the OBD-II port after verifying successful relearn.

Verification

• Confirm the TPMS warning light is not illuminated on the instrument cluster after the test drive.
• Use the scan tool to read current tire pressure values from each sensor to verify all four sensors are communicating with the receiver module.
• Verify that displayed tire pressures on the scan tool match actual tire pressures measured with a gauge, confirming proper sensor function.
