Preparation

Procedure

1. 1

   Locate the trunk latch assembly
   The trunk latch is mounted at the rear of the deck opening where the trunk lid closes against the striker. Verify against the factory service manual whether the latch assembly is mounted to the trunk lid or to the body structure on this specific 2008 Viper before proceeding. It is a black metal assembly with the striker mechanism visible from above and the release cable routing to the side.

   Disconnect the trunk release cable
   Determine whether the trunk release is mechanical (cable) or electric (solenoid/actuator) on this vehicle. If cable-operated, locate the cable attachment point on the latch and disconnect the barrel fitting from the lever slot; if electrically operated, disconnect the electrical connector to the latch actuator instead. Use needle-nose pliers if needed to compress the cable housing retainer clip and pull the cable free from its mounting bracket on the latch body. Pull the cable barrel end out of the lever slot to fully disconnect.

   Remove the trunk latch mounting fasteners
   Remove the mounting fasteners securing the trunk latch assembly. Verify the exact fastener count, size, and head type (hex vs. Torx) against the factory service manual for this 2008 Viper before removal, as these are not confirmed. Keep these bolts in a safe location for reinstallation.

   Remove the trunk latch assembly
   Lift the trunk latch assembly straight up and out of the trunk floor opening. The latch mechanism may have a rubber grommet or seal around its mounting perimeter; ensure this comes out with the latch or remains in place in the trunk floor as appropriate for reinstallation. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or corrosion.

   Prepare the new trunk latch for installation
   If installing a new latch, compare it to the old unit to verify correct match. Transfer any rubber mounting grommets or seals from the old latch to the new one if they are not pre-installed. Ensure the latch lever mechanism moves freely and the spring returns properly before installation.

   Install the new trunk latch assembly
   Position the trunk latch assembly into the trunk floor opening, aligning the 3 mounting holes with the corresponding holes in the trunk floor pan. Ensure any rubber grommet or seal is properly seated. Start all 3 mounting bolts by hand before tightening to ensure proper alignment.

   Tighten the trunk latch mounting bolts
   Using a 10mm socket with extension, tighten the 3 trunk latch mounting bolts in a cross pattern (alternating between bolts) to ensure even seating. Tighten securely but do not overtorque, as the latch body is mounted to sheet metal.

   Reconnect the trunk release cable
   Insert the trunk release cable barrel end into the slot on the latch lever mechanism, ensuring it seats fully and the lever can actuate the cable. Press the cable housing into its retainer clip on the latch body until it clicks into place. Verify the cable housing is secure and cannot pull free under normal tension.

Reassembly

Verification

• Close the trunk lid gently and verify the latch engages the striker properly and holds the trunk closed securely
• Test the trunk release mechanism from inside the vehicle (if equipped with interior release) and from the exterior key cylinder or button to confirm the latch releases properly
• Open and close the trunk several times to verify smooth operation and proper alignment
• Inspect for any unusual noise or binding in the latch mechanism during operation
