Trunk Lid

This procedure covers removal and installation of the trunk lid assembly on a 2008 Dodge Viper, including disconnection of gas struts and alignment adjustment.

Preparation

1. Open the trunk fully and prop it in the open position.
2. Place protective coverings over the rear fascia and quarter panels to prevent scratching during removal.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable if the trunk is equipped with third brake light wiring or other electrical connections.
4. Have your assistant ready to support the trunk lid weight during hinge bolt removal.

Procedure

   Mark hinge alignment
   Use a paint marker or grease pencil to trace the outline of both trunk hinge mounting points where they meet the body. Mark both the hinge position on the trunk lid inner surface and the hinge-to-body mounting location. This will provide reference marks for reinstallation alignment and minimize adjustment time.

   Disconnect electrical connections
   If equipped with a third brake light or trunk lighting integrated into the lid, locate the electrical connector near the hinge area. Press the release tab and disconnect the harness. Route the harness free from any clips so it will not be damaged during lid removal.

   Disconnect gas struts from trunk lid
   Locate the ball socket connection where each gas strut (if equipped) attaches to the trunk lid. Verify the number and type of struts against factory documentation, as some deck lids use a single strut or torsion-bar hinges. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry the retaining clip away from the ball stud, then pull the strut socket off the ball mount. Repeat for any additional strut. The struts will remain attached to the body and will extend once disconnected from the lid.

   Support trunk lid
   Have your assistant firmly support the trunk lid from underneath, holding it in the open position. Ensure they have secure footing and a solid grip on the lid structure before proceeding to remove hinge bolts. The lid will become free once the hinge bolts are removed.

   Remove hinge-to-lid bolts
   Working on one hinge at a time, remove the hinge-to-lid mounting bolts. Verify the exact bolt count per hinge and socket size against factory documentation before proceeding. Keep these bolts organized and separate from body mounting hardware. With your assistant supporting the lid, remove all bolts from both hinges.
   ⚠Do not remove both hinges simultaneously without proper support. The trunk lid will drop suddenly if not supported.

   Remove trunk lid
   With all hinge bolts removed and the assistant supporting the lid, carefully lift the trunk lid up and away from the hinge assemblies. The hinges will remain attached to the body. Move the trunk lid to a safe, padded work surface where it will not be damaged. Avoid dragging the lid across any body panels.

   Inspect hinges and mounting points
   With the trunk lid removed, inspect the hinge assemblies for wear, cracking, or damage. Check the hinge mounting points on the body for stripped threads or elongated bolt holes. Inspect the gas strut mounting points and verify the struts extend and compress smoothly. This is the ideal time to service or replace worn components.

   Position replacement or serviced trunk lid
   With your assistant, lift the trunk lid into position, aligning the hinge mounting holes with the hinges still attached to the body. Use your alignment marks from Step 1 as a guide. Hold the lid in position while preparing to install mounting bolts.

   Install hinge-to-lid bolts loosely
   Start all 4 hinge-to-lid bolts on each hinge by hand, threading them in just enough to hold the lid in position but leaving them loose enough to allow adjustment. Do not tighten bolts fully at this stage. The lid should be held in position but still movable for alignment.

    Reconnect gas struts
    With the trunk lid held in the open position, reconnect each gas strut to its ball mount on the trunk lid. Push the socket firmly onto the ball stud until the retaining clip snaps into place. Verify both struts are securely attached by gently pulling on them.

    Align trunk lid
    Using your alignment marks as a reference, adjust the trunk lid position for even gaps around the perimeter and proper alignment with adjacent body panels. Check the front edge gap along the rear deck, the side gaps at the quarter panels, and the rear alignment at the fascia. The lid can be shifted slightly with the bolts loose. Viper trunk alignment is critical for proper aerodynamics and appearance.

    Tighten hinge bolts
    Once alignment is satisfactory, tighten all hinge-to-lid bolts in a cross-pattern to ensure even clamping. Tighten to the factory torque specification (verify against service documentation); do not overtorque, as the mounting points are into the trunk lid structure. Recheck alignment after tightening and make minor adjustments if needed by loosening and repositioning.

    Reconnect electrical connections
    If disconnected in Step 2, reconnect the electrical harness for the third brake light or trunk lighting. Ensure the connector clicks into place and secure any wiring clips. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

    Test trunk operation
    Slowly open and close the trunk lid several times to verify smooth operation, proper gas strut function, and consistent alignment throughout the travel range. Check that the trunk latches securely and that panel gaps remain even when closed. Listen for any unusual noises or binding.

Reassembly

1. Installation is performed in steps 8-14 above.
2. Fine-tune trunk lid alignment by loosening hinge bolts and making small positional adjustments. Viper trunk lids require careful gap management due to the large panel size.
3. If trunk lid will not latch properly, check striker adjustment at the latch mechanism in addition to hinge alignment.

Verification

• Close the trunk and verify even gaps all around the perimeter, typically 4-6mm consistent spacing.
• Open and close the trunk multiple times to confirm smooth operation and that the lid does not bind or make contact with adjacent panels.
• Verify the third brake light and any trunk lighting functions correctly if equipped.
• Check that the trunk latches securely and requires normal effort to open from the release.
• Inspect alignment from multiple angles and distances to ensure the lid sits flush with surrounding body panels.
