Trunk Strut

Remove and replace the trunk lid gas struts on a 2008 Dodge Viper to restore proper trunk support and operation.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Open trunk lid fully and inspect the current strut mounting points and condition
3. Have an assistant available to support the trunk lid, or prepare a suitable support prop (padded 2x4 or adjustable stand)
4. Verify replacement struts match the original length and ball socket size before beginning removal

Procedure

   Support the trunk lid
   With the trunk lid in the fully open position, position your assistant to hold the trunk lid or place a padded support prop between the trunk opening and the underside of the trunk lid. Ensure the support is secure and will not slip. The trunk lid weighs approximately 30-40 pounds and will have minimal support once the first strut is removed.

   Locate strut attachment points
   Identify the trunk/decklid support strut(s). Confirm the actual number and location of gas struts on this specific 2008 Viper (ZB II) before proceeding, as strut count and mounting may vary from the assumed dual-strut layout. Each strut has a ball socket attachment at the upper end (trunk lid side) and lower end (body side). Note the orientation of the strut with the piston rod pointing upward toward the trunk lid.

   Remove upper strut attachment
   Starting with one strut, locate the ball socket clip at the upper attachment point on the trunk lid bracket. Using a flathead screwdriver or panel tool, carefully pry the spring clip retainer away from the ball stud while pulling the strut socket off the ball. The clip typically releases by lifting one edge. Apply firm, steady pressure to avoid breaking the clip. Once released, pull the strut socket straight off the ball stud.

   Remove lower strut attachment
   With the upper end disconnected, move to the lower ball socket attachment on the body-side bracket. Using the same technique, pry the spring clip retainer away from the ball stud and pull the strut socket straight off. Remove the strut from the vehicle. If the clip is damaged or does not retain properly, note that replacement struts typically include new clips.

   Install new strut lower attachment
   Take the new replacement strut and orient it with the piston rod (thinner section) pointing upward. Align the lower ball socket with the body-side ball stud. Push the socket firmly onto the ball stud until the spring clip engages with an audible click. Tug on the strut to verify the connection is secure and the clip has fully seated.

   Install new strut upper attachment
   While maintaining support of the trunk lid, align the upper ball socket of the new strut with the trunk lid-side ball stud. Push the socket firmly onto the ball stud until the spring clip engages with an audible click. Verify the connection is secure by tugging on the strut. The strut should now be providing support to the trunk lid.

   Replace second strut
   Repeat steps 3 through 6 for the second strut on the opposite side of the trunk. Maintain trunk lid support until both new struts are installed and verified. Work methodically to ensure both ball socket clips are fully engaged at all four mounting points.

   Remove trunk support and test operation
   With both new struts installed, carefully remove the manual support or have your assistant release their hold on the trunk lid. The struts should now hold the trunk lid in the fully open position. Slowly lower the trunk lid to verify smooth operation and controlled resistance. Open the trunk again to verify the struts provide adequate lift assist and hold the lid securely in the open position.

Reassembly

1. No disassembly was required for this procedure. Verify all ball socket clips are fully engaged.
2. Inspect the trunk lid alignment and ensure it closes and latches properly with no interference from the new struts.

Verification

• Open trunk lid and verify it stays open without manual support and does not slowly drift downward
• Close and reopen trunk lid 3-5 times to verify smooth operation and adequate lift assistance
• Visually inspect all four ball socket connections to confirm spring clips are fully seated and struts are secure
• Verify trunk lid closes completely and latches properly without binding
