Washer Pump

Remove and replace the windshield washer pump located in the washer fluid reservoir, accessed through the left front wheel well.

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
3. Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

Procedure

1. 1

   Raise and support the vehicle
   Raise the front of the vehicle using a floor jack positioned at the front center jack point. Support the vehicle with jack stands placed at the designated front lift points behind the wheels. Ensure the vehicle is stable before working underneath.

   Remove the left front wheel
   Remove the left front wheel using the correct socket for the Viper's lug nuts (verify size before starting). Set the wheel aside in a safe location. Set the wheel aside in a safe location.

   Access the wheel well liner
   Locate the front section of the left front wheel well liner. The washer reservoir is mounted behind the liner in the forward portion of the wheel well. Identify the fasteners securing the liner section that provides access to the reservoir.

   Remove wheel well liner fasteners
   Remove the fasteners securing the front portion of the wheel well liner. Check for a combination of push-pin style clips and potentially threaded fasteners. Carefully release any push-pins using a trim removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver by prying the center pin up first, then removing the entire clip. Pull the liner section back to expose the washer reservoir.

   Locate the washer pump
   Identify the washer pump mounted in the bottom or side of the translucent washer fluid reservoir. The pump is a cylindrical unit with an electrical connector on top and a rubber grommet seal where it mounts into the reservoir. Note the orientation of the pump and routing of the output hose.

   Disconnect the electrical connector
   Disconnect the electrical connector from the washer pump. Press the release tab on the connector and pull straight off the pump terminals. Move the connector aside to prevent it from contacting washer fluid.

   Disconnect the output hose
   Disconnect the washer fluid output hose from the pump outlet. The hose is typically secured with a push-on fitting or spring clamp. If a spring clamp is present, use needle-nose pliers to compress and slide it back along the hose, then pull the hose off the pump outlet. Allow residual fluid to drain into your drain pan.

   Remove the washer pump
   Position your drain pan directly beneath the pump location. Grasp the pump body firmly and rotate it counterclockwise while pulling outward to release it from the rubber grommet in the reservoir. The pump should twist and pull free from the mounting grommet. Fluid will drain from the reservoir opening as the pump is removed. Allow the reservoir to drain into the pan.

   Inspect the grommet seal
   Inspect the rubber grommet seal remaining in the reservoir. If the grommet is cracked, hardened, or damaged, carefully pry it out and replace it with a new grommet. If the grommet is in good condition and remains pliable, it can be reused.

    Install the new washer pump
    Lubricate the new pump's seal with a small amount of washer fluid or soapy water to ease installation. Align the pump with the reservoir opening and the grommet. Push the pump into the grommet while rotating clockwise until it seats fully and locks into position. The pump should be secure and not rotate freely.

    Reconnect the output hose
    Push the washer fluid output hose firmly onto the pump outlet until it seats completely. If equipped with a spring clamp, slide it back into position over the hose and pump outlet connection. Ensure the hose is fully seated to prevent leaks.

    Reconnect the electrical connector
    Reconnect the electrical connector to the washer pump terminals. Push the connector on until you hear or feel it click into place, confirming the locking tab has engaged.

    Reinstall the wheel well liner
    Position the wheel well liner section back into place. Reinstall all fasteners in their original locations. Ensure push-pin clips are fully seated by pressing the center pin down until it is flush with the clip body.

    Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle
    Reinstall the left front wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and remove the stands. Lower the vehicle completely to the ground. Torque the lug nuts to the factory-specified value in a star pattern (verify exact torque spec for the 2008 Dodge Viper before final tightening).

    Refill the washer fluid reservoir
    Open the hood and locate the washer fluid reservoir filler cap. Fill the reservoir with windshield washer fluid to the full mark; verify the reservoir's actual capacity against factory specifications. Replace the filler cap.

Reassembly

1. Installation reverses the removal process.
2. Ensure the pump is fully seated in the grommet and rotated to the locked position.
3. Verify all electrical connections are secure and locked.
4. Refill the reservoir to the proper level before testing.

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine.
• Activate the windshield washer function and verify that fluid sprays from both washer nozzles onto the windshield with adequate pressure and volume.
• Listen for normal pump operation without unusual noise or grinding.
• Check for leaks at the pump body, grommet seal, and hose connection while the pump is operating.
• Inspect the wheel well area for any fluid drips after testing.
• Verify the washer fluid reservoir level has not dropped unexpectedly, indicating a leak.
