Wiper Linkage

Remove and replace the windshield wiper linkage assembly on a 2008 Dodge Viper, including cowl panel removal to access the linkage mechanism.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn ignition off
2. Mark wiper arm rest positions on windshield with masking tape for reference
3. Ensure wiper arms are in park position (resting at bottom of windshield)

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove wiper arms
   Lift the plastic cap at the base of each wiper arm to expose the mounting nut. Remove the mounting nut from each wiper arm using the appropriate socket. Rock the wiper arms gently while pulling away from the windshield to remove from the wiper posts. Set wiper arms aside.

   Remove cowl panel fasteners
   Locate and remove the fasteners securing the cowl panel. Starting from the driver side, remove the fasteners along the top edge of the cowl panel. The fasteners may be screws, push-pin retainers, or nuts; verify the specific fastener type on this vehicle before selecting a tool. Check for fasteners near the windshield washer nozzles and at the ends of the cowl panel near the A-pillars.

   Disconnect washer hoses
   Carefully disconnect the windshield washer hoses from the washer nozzles integrated into the cowl panel. Use needle-nose pliers to compress the hose clamps if present, or gently pull the hoses straight off the nozzle barbs. Be prepared for residual washer fluid to drain from the lines.

   Remove cowl panel
   Starting at one end, carefully lift the cowl panel upward and away from the vehicle body. Work along the length of the panel to release any remaining clips securing it to the firewall and fender edges. The panel may be one continuous piece or have multiple sections. Lift the panel clear of the wiper posts and set aside in a safe location where it will not be stepped on.

   Access wiper motor and linkage
   With the cowl removed, the wiper motor and linkage assembly are now visible in the cowl plenum area. Note the routing of the linkage arms and their connection points for reassembly reference. Inspect the area for debris and remove any leaves or buildup.

   Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector on the wiper motor. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the motor. Secure the connector away from the work area to prevent damage.

   Remove wiper linkage mounting fasteners
   Remove the fasteners securing the wiper motor bracket to the cowl plenum (verify exact count and type against OEM service documentation for this vehicle). Then remove the fasteners securing the wiper linkage pivot points to the body. There should be pivot mounting points on both the driver and passenger sides of the plenum.

   Remove linkage assembly
   Carefully maneuver the wiper linkage assembly, with the motor still attached, up and out of the cowl plenum. The linkage arms may need to be positioned at specific angles to clear the body structure. Work slowly to avoid bending the linkage arms or damaging surrounding components.

   Install new linkage assembly
   Position the new wiper linkage assembly into the cowl plenum, lowering it carefully into place. Align the motor mounting bracket and linkage pivot points with their mounting holes in the body structure. Ensure the wiper posts protrude through their respective holes in the cowl structure and are positioned correctly for arm installation.

    Secure linkage mounting points
    Install and tighten the fasteners at the linkage pivot mounting points on both driver and passenger sides. Then install and tighten the wiper motor bracket mounting fasteners. Ensure all connections are secure and the linkage can move freely without binding.

    Reconnect wiper motor connector
    Reconnect the electrical connector to the wiper motor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Give the connector a gentle tug to verify it is fully seated.

    Test wiper operation before reassembly
    Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to run) and activate the wiper system using the stalk control. Verify the linkage operates smoothly through the intermittent, low, and high wiper modes (defer testing the wash function until the washer hoses are reconnected). The wiper posts should move in synchronized arcs without binding or unusual noise. Turn off wipers and allow them to return to park position before proceeding.

    Reinstall cowl panel
    Position the cowl panel over the wiper posts and align it with the mounting locations on the firewall and fender edges. Press the panel down firmly to engage the retaining clips along its length. Ensure all clips are fully seated before installing fasteners.

    Secure cowl panel and reconnect washer hoses
    Install the cowl panel fasteners, working from one end to the other to ensure proper alignment. Reconnect the windshield washer hoses to the nozzles, pushing them firmly onto the barbs until fully seated.

    Install wiper arms
    Align each wiper arm with its respective wiper post using the tape marks on the windshield as reference guides. The driver side arm should rest approximately 1-2 inches above the lower windshield trim when in park position. Press each arm firmly onto its splined post and install the mounting nut. Tighten the nuts securely and close the protective caps.

Reassembly

1. Reassembly follows removal in reverse order
2. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and all cowl panel clips are fully engaged
3. Verify wiper arm park positions align with reference marks before final tightening

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON and test all wiper modes (intermittent, low speed, high speed, and wash function)
• Verify wiper blades travel smoothly across windshield without skipping or binding
• Check that wipers return to proper park position when turned off
• Inspect for any rattles or loose components in the cowl area
• Test windshield washer spray function to confirm hoses are properly connected
