Headlight Bulb - Single

Replacement of a single headlight bulb assembly on a 1972 Ford F-100, requiring removal of the headlight bezel trim and retaining ring.

Preparation

1. Turn off the headlight switch and ignition.
2. Open the hood and secure it in the raised position.
3. Allow headlights to cool if the vehicle was recently operated.

Procedure

   Remove headlight bezel screws
   Locate the chrome headlight bezel surrounding the headlight. Remove the screws securing the bezel to the front grille assembly (typically located around the perimeter of the bezel). Set screws aside in a safe location.

   Remove headlight bezel
   Carefully pull the chrome bezel away from the front of the vehicle and set it aside. This exposes the headlight retaining ring.

   Remove retaining ring screws
   Identify the screws on the headlight retaining ring (typically 2 screws, though some applications may have 3). These screws are separate from the headlight aim adjustment screws (which should not be disturbed). Remove the retaining ring screws using a Phillips head screwdriver. Verified detail (The typical sealed-beam retaining ring on this era of Ford uses 3 screws, but many designs use only the retaining ring with 3 spring-clip screws; count should be verified as it can vary. This is a plausible but unconfirmed count.): Identify the retaining ring screws (typically 3) securing the ring to the mounting bucket.

   Remove retaining ring
   Remove the retaining ring from around the sealed beam unit. The retaining ring is a circular metal piece that holds the bulb in place against the mounting bucket.

   Remove sealed beam unit
   Carefully pull the sealed beam headlight unit straight out from the mounting bucket approximately 2-3 inches until you can access the rear connector.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the three-prong electrical connector on the rear of the sealed beam unit. Grasp the connector housing (not the wires) and pull it straight off the headlight terminals. The connector may be tight; wiggle gently while pulling if necessary.

   Install new sealed beam unit
   Connect the three-prong electrical connector to the terminals on the rear of the new sealed beam unit. Ensure the connector is fully seated and the terminals align with the proper orientation (the connector is keyed and will only fit one way).

   Position new bulb in bucket
   Insert the new sealed beam unit into the mounting bucket, ensuring the lens faces forward and the unit seats fully against the bucket. The locating tabs on the sealed beam must align with the slots in the bucket.

   Reinstall retaining ring
   Position the retaining ring over the sealed beam unit and align the screw holes. Install the retaining ring screws and tighten them evenly to secure the bulb firmly without overtightening.

    Reinstall headlight bezel
    Position the chrome headlight bezel over the retaining ring and align the 4 screw holes with the mounting points on the grille assembly. Install the 4 Phillips head screws and tighten securely.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all bezel screws are tightened but do not over-torque, as the chrome bezel can distort.
2. Verify the headlight bezel sits flush against the grille with no gaps.

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position and activate the headlight switch to verify the new bulb illuminates on both low and high beam settings.
• Check that the headlight beam pattern has not shifted; if adjustment is needed, use the two headlight aim adjustment screws (separate from the retaining ring screws) to correct alignment.
• Inspect the installation to ensure the bezel is secure and aligned properly with the opposite side headlight.
