Trunk/Liftgate Actuator

This procedure addresses replacement of the tailgate latch actuator on a 1972 Ford F-100 pickup truck. Note: This vehicle body style uses a manually-latched tailgate without power actuators from the factory.

• Tailgate actuator assembly (if aftermarket power latch installed) × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket kit-specific replacement
• Tailgate latch assembly (manual OEM replacement) × 1 — Ford D1TZ-9943400-A or equivalent
• Tailgate handle assembly × 1 — Ford D0TZ-9943400-B or equivalent

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. If working on an aftermarket power actuator, disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
3. Open tailgate to horizontal position and support with blocks or have assistant hold securely
4. Clean area around tailgate latch and handle assemblies to prevent dirt intrusion
5. Spray penetrating oil on visible fasteners if corrosion is present

Procedure

1. 1

   Identify actuator type and location
   Determine whether the vehicle has the factory manual latch system or an aftermarket power actuator. Factory manual system: latch mechanism is inside the tailgate near the center, operated by external handle and connecting rods. Aftermarket power actuator: will have an electric motor/solenoid unit mounted inside tailgate with wiring harness. Locate the actuator or latch assembly by inspecting the inside edge of the tailgate.

   Remove tailgate interior access panel (if equipped)
   If an aftermarket actuator is installed, remove the interior access panel or trim on the tailgate. This typically involves removing 4 Phillips-head screws located around the perimeter of the panel. Carefully pull panel away to access internal latch mechanism and wiring. Factory F-100 tailgates may not have an access panel; proceed to next step if not present.

   Disconnect electrical connector (aftermarket power actuator only)
   Locate the electrical connector feeding the power actuator. Press the locking tab and pull connector apart. If connector is corroded, gently wiggle while pulling. Use multimeter to verify no voltage present at actuator terminals before proceeding with removal.

   Remove exterior tailgate handle
   From outside the tailgate, locate the bolts securing the tailgate handle assembly (accessible from inside the tailgate; verify exact bolt count and socket size for 1972 F-100 against factory service manual). Using a 1/2" socket, remove these bolts. Carefully pull handle assembly outward while guiding connecting rods through the handle mechanism. Disconnect rod clips using needle-nose pliers if necessary.

   Disconnect latch control rods
   Inside the tailgate, locate the metal connecting rods running from the handle to the latch mechanism. These are typically held by spring clips or plastic retainers at the latch end. Using needle-nose pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver, carefully pry clips off and disconnect rods from latch lever arms. Note the orientation and position of each rod for reassembly.

   Remove latch or actuator mounting fasteners
   Locate the mounting fasteners securing the latch assembly or aftermarket actuator to the tailgate frame. Factory latch is secured by mounting bolts accessible from inside the tailgate edge (verify exact bolt count for 1972 F-100 against factory service manual). Using a 1/2" or 3/8" socket (depending on bolt head size), remove all mounting bolts. Support the latch/actuator as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from falling.

   Remove failed actuator or latch assembly
   Carefully extract the latch or actuator assembly from the tailgate. You may need to rotate or angle the unit to clear internal tailgate structure. Inspect the mounting area for rust, damage, or debris and clean thoroughly before installing replacement unit.

   Install new actuator or latch assembly
   Position the new latch or actuator assembly into the tailgate mounting location. Align mounting holes with tailgate frame. Start all mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper alignment before tightening. Tighten bolts in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating. No torque specification available; tighten securely but do not overtighten thin tailgate sheet metal.

   Reconnect latch control rods
   Reconnect the metal control rods to the latch lever arms in the same orientation noted during removal. Ensure spring clips or retainers fully engage to prevent rods from disconnecting during operation. Test rod connection by manually moving the latch lever to verify secure attachment.

    Reinstall tailgate handle assembly
    Guide the control rods through the tailgate handle mechanism and position handle assembly into the exterior mounting location. Insert and hand-start the 2 mounting bolts from inside the tailgate. Tighten bolts securely with 1/2" socket. Verify handle sits flush against tailgate and operates smoothly.

    Reconnect electrical connector (aftermarket actuator only)
    If installing an aftermarket power actuator, reconnect the electrical connector to the actuator. Ensure connector locks fully into place. Before proceeding, reconnect negative battery terminal and test actuator operation using the cab switch or key fob to verify proper function before final reassembly.

    Reinstall interior access panel
    If an access panel was removed, position it back into place and secure with the 4 Phillips-head screws. Ensure panel edges seat properly and screws are snug but not overtightened to prevent stripping.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all control rods are securely clipped and moving freely without binding
2. Verify tailgate handle returns to neutral position after operation
3. If aftermarket power actuator was installed, confirm wiring is routed away from moving latch components
4. Test tailgate latch operation multiple times before putting vehicle into service

Verification

• With tailgate in horizontal open position, operate handle or power actuator to confirm latch mechanism engages and disengages smoothly
• Close tailgate and verify it latches securely with no excessive play or rattling
• Attempt to open tailgate from exterior handle to confirm proper release operation
• For aftermarket power actuators, test operation from cab switch and verify proper lock/unlock function
• Inspect for any interference between control rods and tailgate structure during full range of motion
• Drive vehicle over moderate bumps and verify tailgate remains securely latched
