Washer Pump

This procedure covers removal and replacement of the windshield washer pump on a 1972 Ford F-100 with 302ci V8 engine.

Parts

• Windshield washer pump × 1 — Use OEM specification or equivalent for 1972 F-100
• Washer fluid hose (if deteriorated) × 1 — 5/32 inch ID rubber hose
• Hose clamp × 2 — 1/4 inch worm gear clamp

• Windshield washer fluid — 2 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Open hood and secure with prop rod
3. Place shop towels under work area to catch fluid spills
4. Locate washer reservoir on passenger side firewall or inner fender

Procedure

1. 1

   Disconnect battery negative terminal
   Using a wrench, loosen and remove the negative battery cable from the battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during pump replacement. Move cable away from battery post.

   Access washer reservoir and pump
   Locate the windshield washer reservoir on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The pump may be mounted in a grommet on the reservoir, or configured as a separate unit depending on the original equipment; verify the pump type and mounting for this specific vehicle before proceeding. Clear any obstructions for access to the pump and electrical connections.

   Disconnect electrical connection
   Locate the electrical connector on the washer pump. The 1972 F-100 uses a push-on spade terminal connection. Carefully pull the wire connector straight off the pump terminal. Note the wire color for reinstallation.

   Disconnect washer hose
   Using needle-nose pliers, squeeze and slide the hose clamp away from the pump outlet. Pull the rubber washer hose straight off the pump outlet nipple. Some fluid will drain from the hose, so have a shop towel ready. If the hose is cracked or brittle, plan to replace it.

   Remove pump from reservoir
   The pump is held in the reservoir by a rubber grommet seal. Firmly grasp the pump body and twist while pulling outward to break the grommet seal. Pull the pump straight out of the reservoir. Additional fluid will drain from the reservoir opening, so have a container or towels ready to catch the remaining washer fluid.

   Inspect grommet and reservoir
   Examine the rubber grommet in the reservoir for cracks, tears, or hardening. The grommet should be pliable and seal properly. Check the reservoir for cracks or damage. Clean any debris from the grommet mounting hole.

   Install new washer pump
   Align the new pump inlet with the reservoir grommet hole. Apply light pressure and twist the pump body while pushing inward to seat the pump fully into the grommet. The pump should sit flush against the reservoir with the grommet providing a water-tight seal.

   Reconnect washer hose
   Push the washer hose firmly onto the pump outlet nipple until it seats completely. Slide the hose clamp into position approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the hose and tighten securely with pliers or flathead screwdriver. Ensure the hose is not kinked.

   Reconnect electrical connection
   Push the electrical wire connector firmly onto the pump terminal until it seats completely. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the wire.

    Reconnect battery and refill reservoir
    Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and tighten securely. Fill the washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid to the full mark; verify actual reservoir capacity for this vehicle before filling.

Reassembly

1. Verify all electrical connections are secure and properly seated
2. Check that washer hose is not kinked or crimped
3. Ensure pump is fully seated in reservoir grommet with no leaks

Verification

• Turn ignition to accessory position
• Activate washer switch and verify pump runs smoothly without unusual noise
• Confirm washer fluid sprays properly onto windshield with adequate pressure and coverage
• Check for leaks at pump body, hose connection, and grommet seal
• Let pump run for 3-5 seconds and recheck fluid level, top off if needed
• Verify no fluid leaks after pump operation
