Warnings

Perform this service with engine cold or after waiting at least 30 minutes after engine shutdown to avoid burns from hot oil and components.
Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake.
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
  3. Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated.
  4. Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before starting.
  5. Verify you have correct oil filter and air filters for 2011-2014 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost.
  6. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support securely on jack stands under frame rails.
  7. Remove engine splash shield fasteners if equipped to access oil drain plug and filter.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain engine oil
Position drain pan under oil drain plug located on passenger side of oil pan. Using appropriate socket, loosen drain plug slowly. Once loose, quickly remove by hand while keeping slight inward pressure to prevent oil from spilling prematurely. Allow oil to drain completely for at least 5 minutes. Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage. Discard old crush washer and install new crush washer on drain plug.
  2. 2
    Install drain plug
Thread drain plug with new crush washer into oil pan by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Torque drain plug to specification using torque wrench. Wipe area clean with rag.
  3. 3
    Replace engine oil filter
Locate oil filter on driver side of engine block, accessible from underneath. Position drain pan beneath filter. Using oil filter wrench, turn filter counterclockwise to remove. Allow oil to drain from filter mounting area. Clean filter mounting surface on engine block with clean rag. Apply thin film of clean engine oil to rubber gasket on new filter. Thread new filter on by hand until gasket contacts mounting surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand only. Do not use filter wrench to install.
  4. 4
    Add engine oil
Lower vehicle or access engine oil filler cap from above. Remove oil filler cap on driver side valve cover. Using funnel, add 5.5 quarts of Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend oil initially. Install filler cap. Start engine and let idle for 1 minute, watching for oil pressure light to extinguish and checking underneath for leaks at drain plug and filter. Shut off engine and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain to pan. Check oil level with dipstick and add remaining oil to bring level between MIN and MAX marks. Do not overfill.
  5. 5
    Replace engine air filter
Open hood and locate air filter housing on driver side of engine compartment. Release four clips securing air box cover. Remove cover and lift out old air filter element. Inspect air box housing for debris and clean if necessary. Install new air filter element ensuring proper orientation with seal facing down. Replace air box cover and secure all four clips until they click into place.
  6. 6
    Replace cabin air filter
Open passenger door. Locate cabin air filter access door behind glove box on lower right side of HVAC housing. Press tabs or remove screws securing access door and remove. Slide out old cabin air filter noting airflow direction arrow. Check housing for debris. Install new cabin air filter with airflow arrow pointing in same direction as old filter (toward rear of vehicle). Reinstall access door and secure.
  7. 7
    Rotate and inspect tires
Remove all four wheels. Rotate tires according to Ford-recommended pattern for 4WD: front left to rear right, front right to rear left, rear left to front left, rear right to front right. Inspect each tire for irregular wear, cuts, bulges, and verify tread depth is above 2/32 inch. Inspect brake pads and rotors through wheel openings for wear. Check for any leaks from wheel seals or brake components. Reinstall wheels hand-tight.
  8. 8
Torque lug nuts and set tire pressure
Torque all wheel lug nuts to specification in star pattern. Lower vehicle to ground. Perform final torque check on all lug nuts in star pattern with vehicle weight on wheels. Check and adjust tire pressure to specification listed on driver door jamb placard (typically 35 PSI front and rear for standard load).
  9. 9
    Inspect and top off fluids
With engine cold, check coolant level in overflow reservoir - should be at COLD FILL line. Check brake fluid reservoir on driver side firewall - level should be between MIN and MAX. Check power steering fluid reservoir on passenger side of engine - level should be in COLD range. Check windshield washer fluid and fill if low. For 4WD models, visually inspect transfer case, front differential, and rear differential for leaks. If any fluid appears low or leaking, investigate further.
  10. 10
    Perform multi-point inspection
Inspect drive belt for cracks, glazing, or excessive wear. Check belt tensioner for proper operation. Inspect all visible hoses for cracks, bulges, or deterioration. Check battery terminals for corrosion and ensure tight connection. Inspect wiper blades for wear. Test all exterior lights. Check exhaust system for leaks or damage. Inspect suspension components and steering linkage for wear or damage. Document any items requiring attention.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure engine splash shield is reinstalled if removed during service.
  2. Verify oil filler cap is tight and air filter housing is properly secured.
  3. Remove tools and drain pan from under vehicle.
  4. Clean any spilled fluids from chassis and engine bay.
  5. Reset oil life monitoring system: Turn ignition to ON without starting engine, fully depress accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds, turn ignition OFF.

Verification

  • Start engine and verify oil pressure light extinguishes within 2 seconds.
  • Check underneath vehicle for any oil leaks at drain plug and filter after engine reaches operating temperature.
  • Verify oil level is correct on dipstick with engine off and cooled for 5 minutes.
  • Confirm oil life monitor has been reset to 100%.
  • Verify all warning lights on instrument cluster function normally.
  • Test drive vehicle and verify normal operation with no unusual noises or vibrations.
  • Properly dispose of used oil and filter at approved recycling facility.
