This procedure covers removal and replacement of the air suspension compressor on 2011-2014 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with factory air suspension systems.
Warnings
⚠️The air suspension system operates at high pressure. Release system pressure completely before disconnecting any air lines to avoid injury.
⚠Vehicle must be on level ground with wheels chocked. Air suspension will lower when system is disabled.
⚠Disconnect battery negative terminal before working on electrical components to prevent shorts or airbag deployment.
ℹ️The air suspension compressor is located under the vehicle on the driver side frame rail, forward of the rear axle.

Parts
- Air suspension compressor assembly × 1 — Motorcraft or equivalent OEM specification
- Air line O-rings × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks at front wheels
- Turn off air suspension using the disable switch in the rear cargo area if equipped, or through the instrument cluster menu
- Allow at least 5 minutes for system to depressurize completely
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
- Raise rear of vehicle and support with jack stands at frame rails
- Remove driver side rear wheel for better access
Procedure
- 1Access the air suspension compressorLocate the air suspension compressor mounted to the driver side frame rail forward of the rear axle. You may need to remove any protective shields or splash guards secured with 10mm bolts to access the compressor assembly. Clean the area around the compressor to prevent dirt from entering the air lines.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector at the compressor and carefully pull the connector straight off. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.
- 3Disconnect air supply lineLocate the main air supply line connection at the top of the compressor. Press the collar on the push-to-connect fitting inward while pulling the air line straight out. There may be a small amount of residual air pressure release. Inspect the O-ring on the line and replace if damaged or worn.
- 4Disconnect compressor output lineDisconnect the output air line that feeds the suspension system using the same push-to-connect release method. Press the collar while pulling the line straight out. Cap or plug both disconnected lines to prevent contamination from entering the system.
- 5Remove compressor vent tubeDisconnect the small vent tube from the compressor housing. This tube allows moisture to drain and prevents pressure buildup. Note its routing for reinstallation.
- 6Remove compressor mounting boltsRemove the mounting bolts securing the compressor assembly to the frame bracket. Typically there are two or three bolts. Support the compressor weight while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specMounting Bolts31 Nm (23 lb-ft)
- 7Remove compressor assemblyCarefully lower the compressor assembly from the mounting bracket. Maneuver it out from the frame area, being careful not to damage any surrounding components or lines. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or corrosion.
- 8Prepare new compressorRemove the new compressor from packaging and verify it matches the old unit. Install new O-rings on the air line fittings, lightly lubricating them with clean power steering fluid or silicone grease. Ensure all ports are clean and free of debris.
- 9Install new compressorPosition the new compressor into the frame mounting bracket, aligning the mounting holes. Install the mounting bolts hand-tight first to ensure proper alignment, then torque to specification in a cross pattern if multiple bolts are present.Torque specMounting Bolts31 Nm (23 lb-ft)
- 10Connect air linesPush the output air line firmly into the compressor fitting until you hear and feel a click, indicating the locking collar has engaged. Tug gently to verify it is locked in place. Repeat for the supply air line. Ensure both lines are routed properly without kinks or sharp bends.
- 11Connect vent tube and electricalAttach the vent tube to the compressor, ensuring it is routed downward for proper drainage. Connect the electrical connector to the compressor, pressing firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure.
- 12Reinstall protective shieldsReinstall any splash guards or protective shields that were removed for access. Ensure all fasteners are properly secured.
- 13Reinstall wheel and lower vehicleReinstall the driver side rear wheel, torquing lug nuts to specification in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle to the ground and perform final lug nut torque check with vehicle weight on wheels.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts156 Nm (115 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal
- Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine to allow system initialization
- Enable the air suspension system using the switch or menu setting
- The compressor should activate automatically to restore system pressure
- Allow the system to complete its self-leveling cycle, which may take several minutes
Verification
- Start the engine and verify the air suspension compressor runs and builds pressure (you should hear it cycle on briefly)
- Check for air leaks at all connection points by listening for hissing sounds
- Verify the vehicle rises to proper ride height within 2-3 minutes
- Test the air suspension system by loading and unloading cargo to ensure the system self-levels properly
- Check for any warning lights on the instrument cluster related to the air suspension
- Road test the vehicle to confirm normal suspension operation and proper ride height is maintained
