This procedure covers the removal and replacement of side airbag modules located in the front seat backrests on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine.
Warnings
⚠️Side airbags can deploy with lethal force. Never probe, test, or apply voltage to airbag connectors. Serious injury or death may result from improper handling.
⚠️Wait a minimum of 2 minutes after disconnecting the battery before beginning work on any airbag component to allow backup power to discharge completely.
⚠️Always place removed airbag modules face-up on a clean, flat surface away from people. Never place face-down as deployment could cause the module to become a projectile.
⚠Incorrect torque on airbag module mounting bolts can cause deployment failure or unintended deployment. Use calibrated torque wrench and follow specifications exactly.
⚠This procedure requires clearing airbag diagnostic trouble codes after completion. Professional scan tool access is required.
⚠Seats are heavy (50-80 lbs). Use proper lifting technique or have an assistant help remove seats from vehicle.
ℹ️If any airbag component is dropped from a height greater than 12 inches, it must be replaced and cannot be reused.
ℹ️New airbag modules must be programmed/configured to the vehicle. Verify replacement module part number matches exactly including suffix codes.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and isolate cable end away from battery post
- Wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system backup power to fully discharge
- Identify which seat contains the faulty side airbag (driver or passenger side)
- Move seat to full rearward position for access to front mounting bolts
- Ensure you have a clean, flat workspace prepared to place removed airbag module face-up
Procedure
- 1Remove seat mounting boltsLocate the four seat track mounting bolts (two front, two rear). Move seat forward to access rear bolts, then rearward to access front bolts. Remove all four bolts using appropriate socket. Note: These are high-torque safety-critical fasteners.Torque specMounting Bolts39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
- 2Disconnect seat electrical connectorsTilt seat backward carefully to access underneath. Locate all electrical connectors: side airbag connector (yellow), seat position sensor, heated seat (if equipped), and power seat motor (if equipped). Press locking tabs and disconnect all connectors. Side airbag connector will have a yellow safety lock that must be released first.⚠The side airbag connector is yellow and has a secondary lock. Do not force - release secondary lock first before pulling connector apart.
- 3Remove seat from vehicleWith assistance or using proper lifting technique, carefully lift seat assembly and remove from vehicle. Place seat on clean, protected work surface. Ensure seat is stable and will not tip over during work.⚠Seat weighs approximately 50-80 lbs depending on options. Use proper lifting technique to avoid back injury.
- 4Remove seat backrest side coverLocate the seat backrest side cover on the outboard side (door side) of the seat back. Remove trim cover by carefully prying at designated release points or removing retaining screws if present. The side airbag is mounted within the seat backrest frame on the outboard side.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 5Access airbag module mounting locationWith side cover removed, locate the side airbag module mounted in a fabric sleeve or bracket within the seat backrest frame. The module will be oriented vertically along the outboard edge of the backrest. Note the airbag deployment direction (outward toward door) before removal.
- 6Remove airbag module connectorLocate the yellow airbag connector attached to the module. Release the secondary safety lock (typically a red or yellow sliding tab), then press the primary connector lock and carefully pull connector straight off the airbag module. Do not twist or bend connector pins.⚠️Never use electrical test equipment on the airbag connector or module terminals. This can cause deployment.
- 7Remove side airbag module mounting boltsUsing T20 or T30 Torx bit (verify which is correct for your specific model year), remove the airbag module mounting bolts. Typically 2-3 bolts secure the module to the seat frame. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.ℹ️Use correct Torx size to avoid stripping bolt heads. Module mounting bolts are typically T20 or T30.Torque specSide Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 8Remove airbag module from seatCarefully extract the side airbag module from the seat backrest frame and fabric sleeve. Handle module gently and avoid any impact or dropping. Immediately place module face-up (deployment side up) on clean, flat surface away from work area.⚠️Place removed airbag module face-UP on a stable surface at least 10 feet away from people. Never place face-down.
- 9Inspect mounting area and hardwareInspect the seat frame mounting points for damage, cracks, or deformation. Check fabric sleeve or mounting bracket for tears or damage. Verify new airbag module part number matches original exactly, including all suffix codes. Check that mounting bolts are not damaged or corroded.
- 10Install new side airbag modulePosition new airbag module in seat backrest frame with deployment face oriented outboard (toward door side). Align module with mounting holes in seat frame. Ensure fabric sleeve or bracket properly surrounds module if applicable. Module should sit flush against frame.⚠Verify correct orientation - deployment face must point outboard toward vehicle door. Incorrect installation will prevent proper deployment.
- 11Install and torque module mounting boltsInstall airbag module mounting bolts finger-tight, ensuring module is properly seated. Using calibrated torque wrench with appropriate Torx bit, torque bolts to specification in a cross-pattern if multiple bolts. Verify module is secure and does not move.⚠Critical safety torque specification. Over-torque can damage module housing; under-torque can cause deployment issues. Use calibrated torque wrench.Torque specSide Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 12Connect airbag module connectorCarefully align yellow airbag connector with module terminals and push straight on until primary lock clicks. Engage secondary safety lock (slide lock into locked position). Gently tug on connector to verify it is fully locked - it should not pull off.
- 13Reinstall seat backrest side coverPosition seat backrest side cover over airbag module area. Ensure no wiring is pinched and airbag module is not contacted by cover screws. Install cover screws if applicable and secure all trim clips. Cover should fit flush without gaps.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 14Reinstall seat in vehicleWith assistance, carefully lift seat assembly and position over seat track mounting points. Align seat tracks with floor mounting holes. Reconnect all electrical connectors under seat: side airbag (yellow), seat sensors, heated seat, and power seat motor. Ensure yellow airbag connector secondary lock is engaged.
- 15Install and torque seat mounting boltsInstall all four seat track mounting bolts finger-tight. Using calibrated torque wrench, torque all four bolts to specification in a cross-pattern (front left, rear right, front right, rear left). Verify seat is solidly mounted with no movement.⚠Seat mounting bolts are safety-critical. Improper torque can result in seat detachment during collision. Use calibrated torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
