Parts
- Audio amplifier assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification for Sony premium audio system
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
- Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts
- Allow at least 2 minutes after battery disconnect for system capacitors to discharge
- Remove rear seat bottom cushion by lifting front edge sharply upward to release retaining clips
Procedure
- 1Access amplifier locationWith the rear seat bottom cushion removed, locate the amplifier mounted to the floor pan on the driver side beneath where the seat was positioned. The amplifier is a rectangular metal module with multiple wire harness connectors attached.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorsIdentify all electrical connectors attached to the amplifier (typically 3-4 connectors). Press the locking tab on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on wires themselves. Note the orientation and position of each connector for reinstallation.
- 3Remove ground strap connectionLocate the ground strap attached to the amplifier chassis or mounting bracket. Use a 10mm socket to remove the ground strap bolt. Inspect the ground connection point for corrosion. If corrosion is present, clean both the strap terminal and mounting surface with a wire brush until bare metal is exposed.ℹ️A clean ground connection is critical for proper amplifier operation. Ensure both mating surfaces are free of paint, rust, and oxidation.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 4Remove amplifier mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the mounting bolts securing the amplifier to the floor pan or mounting bracket. There are typically 2-4 bolts depending on the specific configuration. Support the amplifier with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from dropping.
- 5Remove amplifier from vehicleCarefully lift the amplifier assembly away from its mounting location. Maneuver it around any surrounding components or brackets. Inspect the mounting area for any debris, moisture, or corrosion that may have accumulated.
- 6Prepare new amplifierRemove the new amplifier from its packaging. Compare it visually to the old unit to confirm correct replacement part. Transfer any mounting brackets or hardware from the old amplifier to the new unit if they are not pre-installed. Clean the mounting surface on the vehicle floor pan with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
- 7Install new amplifierPosition the new amplifier in the mounting location, aligning the bolt holes with the mounting points on the floor pan or bracket. Start all mounting bolts by hand before tightening any of them to ensure proper alignment.
- 8Torque amplifier mounting boltsUsing a torque wrench, tighten the amplifier mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern sequence to ensure even mounting pressure. Verify the amplifier is seated flat against its mounting surface with no gaps or misalignment.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect ground strapPosition the ground strap to its mounting point on the amplifier or bracket. Ensure the contact surface is clean and free of paint or corrosion. Install the ground strap bolt and torque to specification. Verify the strap has solid metal-to-metal contact.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect all electrical connectors to the amplifier in their original positions. Push each connector firmly until you hear or feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 11Reconnect battery and testReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Test the audio system by turning on the radio and adjusting volume. Verify sound output from all speakers to confirm amplifier operation.⚠Do not overtighten the battery terminal bolt as this can damage the terminal or cause cracking.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall rear seat cushionPosition the rear seat bottom cushion over its mounting location. Align the rear edge first, then press down firmly on the front edge until the retaining clips engage with an audible click. Verify the seat is securely fastened by attempting to lift the front edge.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before reconnecting battery
- Verify ground strap connection is clean and torqued to specification for proper amplifier performance
- Test all audio system functions including fade, balance, and subwoofer output if equipped
- Reset radio presets and clock as needed after battery reconnection
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON and verify amplifier powers up (radio display should illuminate)
- Play audio through the system at various volume levels and verify no distortion or cutting out
- Test all speaker zones (front, rear, subwoofer if equipped) to confirm proper amplifier output
- Verify rear seat cushion is properly secured and sits flush with surrounding interior
- Check for any warning lights or audio system fault messages on instrument cluster
