This procedure covers removal and replacement of the center link (drag link) connecting the steering gear to the Pitman arm on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 4WD with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine.

Warnings

⚠️Vehicle must be securely supported on jack stands rated for its weight. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
Steering linkage components are under load. Use proper ball joint separators to avoid personal injury from sudden release.
Do not turn the steering wheel with the center link disconnected as this can damage the steering gear or cause misalignment.
ℹ️A front-end alignment will be required after completing this repair to ensure proper steering geometry and tire wear.

Parts

  • Center link (drag link) assembly × 1 — Motorcraft or equivalent for F-150 4WD
  • Cotter pins (1/8 inch) × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake firmly
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  4. Center the steering wheel and mark its position with tape
  5. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at designated lift points
  6. Support vehicle securely on jack stands under frame rails behind front suspension
  7. Remove both front wheels
  8. Apply penetrating oil to castle nuts and allow 10-15 minutes to soak if components show corrosion

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the center link
From underneath the vehicle, locate the center link (drag link) running from the Pitman arm on the steering gear to the passenger side steering knuckle. Inspect the connection points at both ends. Clean the castle nuts and tapered studs with a wire brush to remove dirt and rust.
  2. 2
    Remove Pitman arm cotter pin
At the driver side connection to the Pitman arm, straighten and remove the cotter pin from the castle nut using needle nose pliers. Discard the old cotter pin as it cannot be reused.
  3. 3
    Remove Pitman arm castle nut
Using a 21mm deep socket and breaker bar, loosen and remove the castle nut securing the center link ball stud to the Pitman arm. Note the number of threads exposed and the orientation for reassembly reference.
  4. 4
Separate center link from Pitman arm
Position the tie rod end separator between the Pitman arm and the center link ball joint. Carefully drive or press the separator to release the tapered stud from the Pitman arm. Do not strike the threaded stud directly. Once separated, support the center link to prevent it from falling.
The center link may drop suddenly when the taper releases. Keep hands and body clear of the separation point.
  5. 5
    Remove passenger side cotter pin
At the passenger side connection to the steering knuckle tie rod stud, straighten and remove the cotter pin from the castle nut using needle nose pliers. Discard the old cotter pin.
  6. 6
    Remove passenger side castle nut
Using an 18mm socket and breaker bar, loosen and remove the castle nut securing the center link to the passenger side steering knuckle connection point. Support the center link as you remove the nut.
  7. 7
    Separate and remove center link
Use the tie rod end separator to release the tapered stud from the passenger side steering knuckle connection. Once separated, carefully lower and remove the center link assembly from the vehicle. Inspect the Pitman arm and steering knuckle tapered holes for damage or excessive wear.
  8. 8
    Prepare new center link
Compare the new center link to the old unit to verify correct part. Ensure all ball joint boots are intact and properly seated. Check that the tapered studs are clean and free of protective coating or debris. Apply a light film of clean engine oil to the tapered stud surfaces.
  9. 9
Install center link to passenger side
Position the new center link and align the passenger side ball stud with the steering knuckle connection point. Insert the tapered stud fully into the hole. Install the castle nut and tighten by hand until snug. Ensure the stud is fully seated in the taper before final torquing.
  10. 10
Install center link to Pitman arm
Swing the driver side of the center link up to the Pitman arm and align the ball stud with the Pitman arm hole. Insert the tapered stud fully and install the castle nut. Tighten by hand until snug, ensuring proper seating of the taper.
  11. 11
Torque castle nuts and install cotter pins
Using a calibrated torque wrench, torque both castle nuts to specification. Tighten further if necessary (up to 1/6 additional turn) to align the castle nut slots with the cotter pin holes in the studs. Install new cotter pins through the aligned holes and bend the ends to secure. Ensure cotter pins are fully inserted and properly spread to prevent backing out.
Never loosen a castle nut to align cotter pin holes. Only tighten beyond specified torque if needed for alignment, not exceeding 1/6 turn additional.
    Torque spec
    Castle Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Verify installation
Visually inspect both connections to ensure the tapered studs are fully seated, castle nuts are properly torqued, and cotter pins are correctly installed and bent. Check that all ball joint boots are intact and properly positioned. Attempt to move the center link by hand to verify there is no looseness at either connection point.
  13. 13
    Reinstall wheels
Install both front wheels onto the hub, ensuring the mounting surfaces are clean. Thread all lug nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern to the specified torque using a calibrated torque wrench.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts156 Nm (115 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Lower vehicle from jack stands using floor jack
  2. Remove jack stands and completely lower vehicle to ground
  3. Perform final torque check on wheel lug nuts with vehicle weight on wheels
  4. Verify steering wheel is still centered
  5. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

  • Start engine and turn steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while stationary, listening for unusual noises or binding
  • Check that steering wheel returns to center position smoothly
  • Perform a test drive at low speed in a safe area, verifying steering response and checking for unusual vibrations or wandering
  • Inspect all connection points for any signs of leakage from ball joint boots
  • Schedule a professional front-end alignment as soon as possible to restore proper steering geometry and prevent premature tire wear
