This procedure covers the removal and installation of the exhaust tip on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine, including proper alignment and securing.
Warnings
⚠️Allow exhaust system to cool completely before starting work. Exhaust components can remain extremely hot for over an hour after engine shutdown.
⚠Wear gloves when working with exhaust components as edges may be sharp and surfaces corroded.
ℹ️The 3.5L EcoBoost features a dual exhaust system. This procedure covers one exhaust tip replacement; repeat if replacing both sides.

Parts
- Exhaust tip × 1 — OEM or aftermarket tip compatible with 3.5L EcoBoost dual exhaust
- Clamp or mounting hardware × 1 — Depends on tip design - band clamp or flange mount
Preparation
- Ensure engine and exhaust system are completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Raise rear of vehicle using jack and support securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
- Inspect exhaust tip mounting method to confirm whether it uses a clamp-on design or flange mount
- Apply penetrating oil to any visible fasteners or clamp bolts and allow to soak for 10-15 minutes
Procedure
- 1Access the exhaust tipPosition yourself under the rear of the vehicle with adequate clearance. Locate the exhaust tip on the driver or passenger side. The tip will be at the end of the tailpipe, typically extending just past the rear bumper. Identify the mounting method - most factory tips use a clamp system while some aftermarket may use a slip-fit or flange connection.
- 2Remove clamp or mounting fastenersIf equipped with a band clamp: Locate the clamp bolt(s) securing the tip to the tailpipe. Use appropriate socket to loosen and remove the clamp bolt completely. Spread the clamp slightly to release tension. If equipped with flange mount: Remove the flange bolts securing the tip to the tailpipe flange. Keep hardware for potential reuse if in good condition.
- 3Remove the exhaust tipWith fasteners removed, carefully twist and pull the exhaust tip off the tailpipe. If tip is seized due to carbon buildup or corrosion, apply additional penetrating oil and allow to soak. Gently twist while pulling to break the seal. Avoid using excessive force that could damage the tailpipe itself.
- 4Clean the tailpipe endUse a wire brush to thoroughly clean the outer diameter of the tailpipe where the new tip will mount. Remove all carbon deposits, rust, and old gasket material. For clamp-on tips, ensure the surface is smooth to allow proper sealing. For flange connections, clean the flange face completely and inspect for damage or warping.
- 5Prepare new exhaust tipInspect the new exhaust tip for any shipping damage or debris inside. If using a clamp-on design, verify the clamp is positioned correctly on the tip inlet. For flange-mounted tips, apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to bolt threads and check that any gasket is properly seated.
- 6Install new exhaust tipSlide the new exhaust tip onto the tailpipe, ensuring it seats fully. For clamp-on design, the tip should slide on approximately 2-3 inches. Align the tip so it exits parallel to the bumper and centered within the bumper cutout. For dual tips, match the angle and position to the opposite side for symmetrical appearance.
- 7Secure the exhaust tipFor clamp-on design: Position the clamp over the connection point and hand-tighten the clamp bolt. Verify tip alignment before final tightening. Tighten clamp bolt firmly but do not over-torque as this may crush the pipe. For flange-mounted tips: Install flange bolts with anti-seize and torque according to specification. Ensure even tightening in a cross-pattern if multiple bolts are present.Torque specExhaust Flange Bolts45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- 8Verify installation and clearanceCheck that exhaust tip has adequate clearance from bumper, hitch receiver (if equipped), and any suspension or chassis components. Tip should not contact any part of the vehicle. Verify the tip is secure by attempting to twist or pull - there should be no movement. Check alignment from behind the vehicle to ensure professional appearance.
Reassembly
- No additional reassembly required for this procedure
- Lower vehicle from jack stands and remove all tools from under vehicle
- If both exhaust tips are being replaced, repeat procedure for opposite side maintaining consistent alignment
Verification
- Start the engine and verify there are no exhaust leaks at the tip connection - listen for unusual hissing or feel for escaping gases
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and inspect tip connection for any signs of leakage or loosening
- Visually inspect tip alignment from multiple angles to ensure proper positioning and professional appearance
- After first 50-100 miles of driving, re-inspect clamp tightness or flange bolts and adjust if necessary
