Parts
- HVAC control panel assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Panel retaining clips (if broken) × 1 — Ford panel clip assortment
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Set steering wheel to straight-ahead position
- Ensure ignition is in OFF position and key is removed
Procedure
- 1Remove center dash trim panelUsing plastic trim tools, carefully pry the center dash bezel starting from the bottom edge. Work around the perimeter releasing all clips. Pull the panel forward gently to access the rear connectors. Disconnect the electrical connector for the hazard switch if equipped. Remove the trim panel completely from the vehicle.
- 2Remove vent assembly (if required)On some configurations, the center air vent assembly may need to be removed for access. Remove the two screws securing the vent assembly and carefully pull forward. Disconnect any electrical connectors for vent lighting or trim accent lighting if present.
- 3Access HVAC control panel fastenersLocate the four screws securing the HVAC control panel to the instrument panel. Two screws are typically visible at the top corners and two at the bottom corners of the control panel opening. Remove all four screws and place in magnetic tray.
- 4Pull control panel forwardCarefully pull the HVAC control panel forward from the dash opening approximately 3-4 inches. Support the panel with one hand while accessing the rear connections. Use flashlight to illuminate the back of the panel.
- 5Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate all electrical connectors on the rear of the HVAC control panel (typically 2-3 connectors depending on configuration). Press the locking tabs and carefully disconnect each connector. Note the position and orientation of each connector for reinstallation.
- 6Disconnect temperature blend door cableLocate the temperature control cable attached to the rear of the control panel. Press the cable retaining clip and slide the cable end off the temperature control arm. Pull the cable housing from the bracket on the control panel by squeezing the retaining tabs.
- 7Remove HVAC control panelWith all electrical connectors and cables disconnected, pull the HVAC control panel completely out of the dash opening. Inspect the mounting area and clean any debris or dust before installing the new panel.
- 8Install new HVAC control panelPosition the new HVAC control panel near the dash opening. Reconnect the temperature blend door cable first by inserting the cable housing into the bracket until it clicks, then attaching the cable end to the control arm. Reconnect all electrical connectors ensuring they click firmly into place.
- 9Secure control panelPush the HVAC control panel into the dash opening, ensuring all wiring is properly routed and not pinched. Install the four mounting screws and tighten evenly. Do not overtighten as the mounting points are plastic.
- 10Reinstall trim componentsReinstall the center vent assembly if removed, securing with screws. Reconnect any electrical connectors for lighting. Position the center dash bezel and press firmly around all edges to engage all retaining clips. Verify all clips are fully seated.
Reassembly
- Reconnect battery negative terminal and verify battery connection is tight
- Ensure all trim panels are flush and properly seated with no gaps
- Verify no tools or parts were left in dash cavity
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify HVAC control panel illuminates properly
- Test all HVAC fan speed settings from low to high to confirm electrical connection
- Test temperature control through full range (cold to hot) and verify smooth operation
- Test mode selector (defrost, floor, vent positions) and verify proper airflow from each setting
- Check for proper operation of A/C button and rear defrost button with indicator lights
- Verify all trim panels are secure and no rattles are present
- Test automatic climate control functions if equipped (dual zone, auto mode)
