Parts
- Instrument cluster assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or verified replacement
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system discharge
- Adjust steering column to lowest and fully extended position for maximum access
- Ensure ambient temperature is between 60-80°F for easier trim panel removal
Procedure
- 1Disconnect batteryLoosen and remove the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable and secure it away from the battery post. Wait a minimum of 2 minutes before proceeding to allow airbag system to fully discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower steering column coversLocate the two screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover. Remove both screws, then carefully pull the lower cover away from the column. The cover will have retaining clips on the sides that require gentle outward pressure to release.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 3Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the upper cover fasteners. Remove the screws securing the upper steering column cover. Lift the upper cover up and away from the column, being careful not to damage the ignition lock cylinder surround or wiring harnesses.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 4Remove instrument cluster bezelUsing a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry the instrument cluster bezel from the dashboard starting at the bottom corners. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing the retaining clips. There are approximately 8-10 clips holding the bezel. Once all clips are released, pull the bezel straight back to clear the instrument cluster and set aside.⚠Apply gentle even pressure when releasing clips to avoid breaking the bezel tabs
- 5Remove cluster mounting boltsLocate the four mounting bolts securing the instrument cluster to the dashboard support bracket (two on top, two on bottom). Using a 10mm socket, remove all four bolts and retain them for reinstallation.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Pull cluster forwardCarefully pull the instrument cluster straight forward approximately 3-4 inches to access the electrical connectors on the rear. Support the cluster with one hand while accessing the connectors. Do not let the cluster hang by the wiring harnesses.⚠Support the weight of the cluster at all times to prevent damage to electrical connectors
- 7Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the three main electrical connectors on the back of the instrument cluster. Press the release tab on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. The connectors are: main power/data connector (large gray connector), lighting connector (medium white connector), and ground connector (small black connector). Label each connector if necessary for reference.ℹ️Do not pull on wires; always grip the connector body when disconnecting
- 8Remove instrument clusterWith all connectors disconnected, remove the instrument cluster completely from the dashboard opening. Place the cluster face-down on a clean, soft surface to protect the lens. Avoid touching the LCD screen or applying pressure to the cluster face.⚠Place cluster on a soft lint-free cloth to prevent scratches to the lens
- 9Install new instrument clusterRemove the new or replacement instrument cluster from packaging. Position the cluster near the dashboard opening and reconnect all three electrical connectors in reverse order of removal. Ensure each connector clicks securely into place and is fully seated. Verify the ground connection is secure.
- 10Secure cluster to dashboardCarefully guide the instrument cluster into the dashboard opening, ensuring no wires are pinched. Align the mounting holes and install all four mounting bolts finger-tight. Once all bolts are started, torque them in a cross pattern to specification.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall instrument cluster bezelPosition the instrument cluster bezel over the cluster, aligning all mounting points. Starting at the top center, press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. You should hear audible clicks as each clip seats. Verify the bezel is flush with the dashboard on all sides.
- 12Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover onto the column, aligning the screw holes. Install and torque the upper cover screws. Place the lower steering column cover in position, ensuring all retaining clips align properly. Install and torque the lower cover screws.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 13Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal. Install the terminal bolt and torque to specification. Ensure the cable is properly seated on the battery post before tightening.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully engaged and locked
- Check that steering column covers do not interfere with steering wheel adjustment
- Confirm instrument cluster bezel is flush with dashboard surface
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine and verify instrument cluster powers on and completes self-test sequence
- Check that all warning lights illuminate during bulb check and then extinguish appropriately
- Verify speedometer needle sweeps during self-test
- Confirm all gauges (fuel, temperature, oil pressure) display correctly
- Test dimmer control to ensure backlighting adjusts properly
- Check that odometer and trip meter display correctly
- Verify message center displays proper messages without errors
- If equipped, confirm compass and outside temperature display correctly
- Start engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated (except those for existing conditions)
- If cluster was replaced, vehicle may require programming or configuration using Ford IDS or equivalent scan tool to transfer VIN, mileage, and configuration data
