This procedure replaces the neutral safety switch (also called the digital transmission range sensor) on the 6R80 automatic transmission in 2011-2014 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost 4WD models.
Warnings
⚠Ensure vehicle is completely cool before beginning work to avoid burns from hot transmission fluid and components
⚠Park on a level surface to ensure accurate transmission fluid level when refilling
⚠️Vehicle must be securely supported on jack stands - never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack
ℹ️The neutral safety switch is located on the driver's side of the transmission near the manual shift linkage

Parts
- Digital Transmission Range Sensor (Neutral Safety Switch) × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification for 6R80 transmission
- Sensor O-ring seal × 1 — Typically included with sensor
Fluids
- Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF — 1.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake firmly
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent electrical short or accidental starting
- Raise front of vehicle using floor jack and support securely on jack stands at frame rails
- Allow transmission to cool completely if vehicle was recently driven
Procedure
- 1Access the neutral safety switchFrom underneath the vehicle on the driver's side, locate the digital transmission range sensor (neutral safety switch) mounted on the left side of the transmission case near the manual valve lever. Clean the area around the sensor with shop towels to prevent contamination.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull straight away from the sensor. Inspect the connector pins for damage or corrosion. Note the orientation of the connector for reassembly.
- 3Position drain panPlace a drain pan directly beneath the sensor location. Expect approximately 1-2 quarts of transmission fluid to drain when the sensor is removed, depending on fluid level and vehicle position.
- 4Remove sensor mounting boltsRemove the two sensor mounting bolts using the appropriate metric socket. Keep bolts in a clean location for reinstallation. The sensor is secured with two bolts in a vertical orientation.Torque specSensor Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 5Extract the sensorCarefully pull the sensor straight out from the transmission case. Fluid will drain from the opening. Allow fluid to drain completely into the pan. If the sensor is stuck, use a small pry bar gently against the mounting flange, being careful not to damage the transmission case.
- 6Inspect mounting surface and manual valveUsing a shop towel, clean the sensor mounting surface on the transmission case. Inspect the manual valve lever inside the transmission opening for damage or excessive wear. Check the old sensor O-ring for cuts or deterioration.
- 7Prepare new sensorRemove the new sensor from packaging. Verify that a new O-ring seal is installed on the sensor body. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean MERCON LV ATF to ease installation and prevent damage during insertion.
- 8Install new sensorAlign the sensor with the manual valve lever inside the transmission case. The sensor has a specific orientation - the manual lever should engage with the sensor's internal mechanism. Push the sensor firmly into the transmission case until it seats completely against the mounting surface.
- 9Install mounting boltsInstall both sensor mounting bolts finger-tight, ensuring the sensor remains properly seated. Tighten both bolts evenly in a crossing pattern to the specified torque value of 12.0 Nm (9.0 lb-ft) using a torque wrench.Torque specSensor Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the sensor until you hear or feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secured properly.
- 11Refill transmission fluidLocate the transmission fluid dipstick/fill tube in the engine bay. Using a funnel or fluid transfer pump, add approximately 1.5 quarts of Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF. This compensates for the fluid lost during sensor replacement.
- 12Check transmission fluid levelReconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. With the engine running and the vehicle on level ground, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) pausing 2-3 seconds in each position, then return to Park. Check the fluid level on the dipstick with engine running in Park. Add fluid as necessary to bring level to the proper range.
Reassembly
- Lower vehicle from jack stands carefully
- Remove wheel chocks
- Test drive vehicle to verify proper operation in all gear ranges
Verification
- Verify engine starts only in Park and Neutral positions - engine should not crank in any other gear position
- Confirm backup lights illuminate when transmission is shifted into Reverse
- Check for transmission fluid leaks around the sensor mounting area after test drive
- Verify transmission shifts smoothly through all gears without hesitation
- Use a scan tool to confirm there are no transmission range sensor fault codes stored in the PCM
