Flashlight or work light
Parts
- Replacement radio/head unit (SYNC or aftermarket) × 1 — OEM part varies by trim level - verify compatibility
- Radio wiring harness adapter (if using aftermarket radio) × 1 — Metra 70-5521 or equivalent
- Radio dash kit (if using aftermarket radio) × 1 — Metra 95-5820B or equivalent
- Antenna adapter (if using aftermarket radio) × 1 — Motorola to aftermarket adapter
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Gather all replacement components and verify compatibility with vehicle year and trim level
- Test replacement radio if possible before installation to avoid reinstallation work
Procedure
- 1Disconnect batteryLocate the battery in the engine compartment. Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable and secure it away from the battery post to prevent accidental contact. Wait at least 2 minutes for capacitors to discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove center instrument panel trim bezelStarting at the bottom edge of the center bezel (around the radio and climate controls), carefully insert a plastic trim tool between the bezel and dashboard. Gently pry outward to release the retaining clips. Work your way around all edges - there are approximately 8-10 clips securing this panel. Pull the bezel straight back once all clips are released.
- 3Disconnect climate control connectorsWith the bezel pulled away from the dash, locate the electrical connectors on the rear of the climate control panel. Press the locking tabs and disconnect all climate control connectors. On dual-zone climate systems, there will be multiple connectors. Set the bezel aside in a safe location.
- 4Remove radio mounting boltsLocate the four 10mm bolts securing the radio chassis to the dashboard support brackets (two on each side of the radio). Using a 10mm socket with extension, remove all four bolts. Keep these bolts organized as they will be reused unless installing an aftermarket dash kit.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 5Pull radio unit from dashCarefully pull the radio assembly straight back out of the dashboard opening. You will need approximately 6-8 inches of clearance to access the rear connectors. Support the weight of the radio to prevent strain on the wiring harnesses.
- 6Disconnect antenna cableLocate the black antenna cable connector on the rear of the radio unit (typically on the right side). Grasp the connector body (not the cable) and pull straight back to disconnect. This is a friction-fit connector and should release with moderate force.
- 7Disconnect main radio harness connectorsIdentify the two or three main wiring harness connectors on the back of the radio. Press the locking tab on each connector while pulling straight back to disconnect. On SYNC-equipped vehicles, there may be additional USB and auxiliary connectors - disconnect all of them. Label connectors if installing an aftermarket unit.
- 8Remove factory radioOnce all connections are disconnected, remove the factory radio completely from the vehicle. Inspect all connectors for damage or corrosion. If reusing the factory radio, store it carefully. If installing aftermarket, proceed with harness adapter installation per adapter instructions.
- 9Install replacement radioConnect all wiring harnesses to the new radio unit before inserting into dash. For factory replacement, connect the main harness connectors, antenna cable, and any auxiliary inputs. For aftermarket installations, connect the harness adapter, antenna adapter, and any additional interfaces (steering wheel control adapter, etc.). Ensure all connections are fully seated and locked.
- 10Test radio function before final assemblyTemporarily reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ACC or ON position and verify radio powers on, all speakers function, AM/FM reception works, and steering wheel controls operate (if applicable). Test backup camera display if equipped. If any issues are found, address them before proceeding.
- 11Secure radio to dashboardOnce function is verified, disconnect battery again for safety. Carefully slide the radio assembly back into the dashboard opening, routing all wiring behind the unit. Align the mounting holes with the support brackets. Install the four 10mm mounting bolts and tighten evenly in a cross pattern to the specified torque.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall center trim bezelReconnect all climate control electrical connectors to the back of the bezel panel. Ensure each connector is fully seated and locked. Align the bezel with the dashboard opening and carefully press around all edges to engage the retaining clips. You should hear audible clicks as each clip seats. Verify the bezel is flush with the surrounding dashboard.
- 13Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery cable to the battery post. Tighten the terminal bolt to the specified torque. Ensure the connection is secure but do not overtighten as this can damage the battery terminal.⚠Do not exceed specified torque on battery terminal to prevent thread or terminal damageTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all dashboard trim panels are properly seated with no gaps
- Ensure all climate control buttons and vents operate smoothly
- Check that hazard lights and other controls in the center stack function normally
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON and verify radio powers up and displays correctly
- Test all audio sources: AM, FM, SiriusXM (if equipped), Bluetooth, USB, and auxiliary input
- Verify all speakers produce sound by adjusting fade and balance settings
- Test steering wheel audio controls for volume, track skip, and source selection
- If equipped, verify backup camera activates when shifting into reverse
- Check that radio retains settings after key cycle (station presets, clock, etc.)
- Verify no warning lights or messages appear on instrument cluster related to radio/SYNC system
- Test voice commands if SYNC system is installed
