Parts
- Instrument cluster assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford part or verified aftermarket equivalent
- Instrument cluster connector seals (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Allow vehicle to sit for at least 5 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
- Tilt steering wheel to lowest position and move fully forward for access
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection during the repair.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower steering column coverLocate the Phillips screws on the underside of the lower steering column shroud (typically 2-3 screws). Remove these screws and carefully pull the lower cover down and away from the steering column. Set aside with hardware.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 3Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the retaining tabs on the sides of the upper steering column shroud. Gently squeeze or pry the tabs while lifting the upper cover up and back to release it from the column. On some models, there may be one or two screws at the bottom of the upper shroud that must be removed first.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 4Remove instrument cluster bezelUsing trim panel removal tools, carefully pry the instrument cluster bezel (outer trim ring) away from the dashboard starting at the bottom corners. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing the retaining clips. Pull the bezel straight back once all clips are released. On some models, you may need to tilt the top edge toward you first.⚠Work slowly to avoid breaking plastic retaining clips. Excessive force can crack the bezel or damage the dashboard.
- 5Remove instrument cluster mounting boltsWith the bezel removed, locate the four instrument cluster mounting bolts (typically 7mm or 8mm). These are usually positioned at the corners of the cluster. Remove all four bolts completely and set aside.ℹ️Some models may have additional brackets or ground straps attached to these mounting points.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Pull cluster forward and access connectorsCarefully pull the instrument cluster straight out from the dashboard approximately 3-4 inches. You will feel resistance from the electrical connectors on the back. Tilt the bottom edge toward you slightly to create working room behind the cluster.⚠Do not pull cluster out more than 6 inches or you risk damaging wiring harnesses. Support the weight of the cluster during this step.
- 7Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the electrical connectors on the rear of the instrument cluster (typically 3-4 large multi-pin connectors). Press the release tab on each connector while pulling straight back to disconnect. Note the position and color of each connector for reassembly. If present, disconnect any ground strap.⚠Do not twist or bend connectors during removal. Pull straight back on connector body, not on wires.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 8Remove instrument cluster from vehicleWith all connectors disconnected, carefully remove the instrument cluster assembly from the dashboard opening. Place it face-down on a clean, soft surface to protect the lens and display.⚠Avoid touching or pressing on the LCD display or gauge faces during handling.
- 9Prepare new instrument clusterRemove the new or replacement instrument cluster from its packaging. Inspect all connector pins on the rear of the cluster for damage or corrosion. Verify that the new cluster matches the configuration of the original unit (gauge layout, display type, etc.).ℹ️Ford instrument clusters are VIN-encoded and may require dealer programming to display correct mileage and configuration settings.
- 10Install new cluster and connect harnessesPosition the new instrument cluster near the dashboard opening. Reconnect all electrical connectors in their original positions, ensuring each connector clicks fully into place. Reattach any ground straps if present. Push the cluster partially into the opening to verify all connections are secure.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 11Secure instrument cluster with mounting boltsAlign the instrument cluster with the mounting holes in the dashboard. Install all four mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating.⚠Do not overtighten mounting bolts as this can crack the cluster housing or warp the dashboard.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall instrument cluster bezelPosition the instrument cluster bezel over the cluster assembly, aligning all mounting tabs with their corresponding slots in the dashboard. Press firmly around the entire perimeter until all clips snap into place with an audible click.ℹ️Verify that the bezel sits flush with the dashboard on all sides before proceeding.
- 13Reinstall steering column coversPlace the upper steering column cover over the column, ensuring it seats properly around the ignition cylinder and multifunction switches. Install the lower cover and align the screw holes. Install all cover screws and torque to specification.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 14Reconnect battery and testReconnect the negative battery cable to the battery post. Tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine) and verify that the instrument cluster illuminates properly. Check that all gauges perform their sweep test and that warning lights function correctly.⚠Ensure battery terminal is clean and free of corrosion before reconnecting. Poor connection can cause electrical system faults.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all dashboard trim pieces are fully seated and secure
- Check that all electrical connectors are fully latched and no wiring is pinched
- Reset clock and radio presets as needed
- If equipped with MyFord Touch or SYNC, verify system boots properly
Verification
- Start the engine and verify speedometer reads zero at idle
- Drive vehicle at low speed in a safe area and verify speedometer displays correct speed
- Verify odometer displays correct mileage (may require dealer programming if incorrect)
- Check that all warning lights extinguish after engine start as normal
- Verify tachometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and all other cluster functions operate correctly
- Test instrument cluster dimming function with headlight switch
- Scan for diagnostic trouble codes and clear any battery disconnect-related codes
- If speedometer still does not function, check for codes related to vehicle speed sensor or ABS module
