Parts

  • Throttle body gasket × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
  • Throttle body assembly (if replacing) × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure in raised position
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes to allow capacitors to discharge
  5. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on cover; it is retained by grommets

Procedure

  1. 1
    Loosen air intake tube clamps
Locate the air intake tube running from the air filter housing to the throttle body. Using a flat blade screwdriver or 8mm socket, loosen the hose clamps at both ends of the intake tube. Do not remove clamps completely at this time.
  2. 2
    Disconnect Mass Air Flow sensor
Locate the MAF sensor on the air intake tube near the air filter housing. Press the release tab on the electrical connector and pull straight out to disconnect. Set connector aside where it will not contact engine or moving parts.
  3. 3
    Remove air intake tube
Lift and remove the air intake tube from the throttle body and air filter housing. The tube may require gentle twisting to break it free from the rubber couplers. Set tube aside in a clean area.
  4. 4
    Disconnect throttle body electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the passenger side of the throttle body. Press down on the red locking tab, then press the release tab while pulling the connector straight back away from the throttle body. Inspect connector and terminals for corrosion or damage.
  5. 5
    Disconnect PCV hose
Locate the small PCV hose connected to the bottom or side of the throttle body. Squeeze the quick-disconnect tabs and pull the hose straight off the throttle body nipple. Be prepared for a small amount of oil residue.
  6. 6
    Remove throttle body mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the four throttle body mounting bolts in a cross pattern (top-left, bottom-right, top-right, bottom-left). Keep bolts organized as they will be reused. Note the position of any brackets or ground wires attached to the bolts.
  7. 7
    Remove throttle body
Carefully pull the throttle body straight away from the intake manifold. If it resists, gently twist while pulling. Do not pry or use excessive force. Remove and discard the old throttle body gasket from the intake manifold surface.
Do not allow debris or foreign objects to fall into the open intake manifold
  8. 8
    Clean mounting surfaces
Using a clean shop towel, thoroughly clean the throttle body mounting surface on the intake manifold. Remove all traces of old gasket material. Ensure no debris falls into the intake manifold opening. Cover the intake opening with a clean towel while cleaning.
  9. 9
    Install new throttle body gasket
Position the new throttle body gasket onto the intake manifold. Ensure the gasket is properly aligned with all four bolt holes and sits flat against the mounting surface. The gasket should fit without forcing.
  10. 10
    Install throttle body
Carefully position the new or cleaned throttle body onto the intake manifold, aligning it with the gasket and bolt holes. Ensure the electrical connector is accessible and facing the correct direction (passenger side).
  11. 11
Install and torque throttle body bolts
Hand-thread all four throttle body mounting bolts, reinstalling any brackets or ground wires in their original positions. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern using a torque wrench to the specified value. Make two passes: first to 5 Nm, then to final specification.
    Torque spec
    Throttle Body Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect PCV hose
Push the PCV hose firmly onto the throttle body nipple until the quick-disconnect clicks into place. Tug gently to verify secure connection.
  13. 13
    Reconnect throttle body connector
Align and push the electrical connector onto the throttle body until it clicks. Ensure the red locking tab is fully seated. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is locked in place.
  14. 14
    Install air intake tube
Position the air intake tube onto the throttle body and air filter housing. Ensure the tube is fully seated on both ends and aligned properly. Tighten both hose clamps to specification using the appropriate tool.
    Torque spec
    Air Intake Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  15. 15
    Reconnect MAF sensor and finalize
Reconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector until it clicks into place. Reinstall the engine cover by aligning grommets and pressing down firmly. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Reassembly

  1. Double-check all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify all hose clamps are tight and properly positioned
  3. Ensure no tools or parts have been left in the engine compartment

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine; check that no warning lights are illuminated beyond normal
  • Start engine and allow to idle; verify smooth idle with no vacuum leaks (hissing sounds)
  • Verify throttle response by gently pressing accelerator pedal; engine should respond smoothly without hesitation
  • Check for any air leaks around throttle body and intake tube connections
  • If idle is rough or unstable, allow engine to run for 5-10 minutes to complete throttle relearn procedure
  • Test drive vehicle to confirm normal throttle operation and no check engine light
