This procedure replaces the tailgate liftgate actuator on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150, which controls the power locking and releasing mechanism of the tailgate.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require system relearning for power windows and other modules.
⚠The tailgate actuator is under spring tension when the tailgate is closed. Do not force components during removal.
ℹ️This procedure requires the tailgate to be in the closed but unlocked position for access to mounting hardware.

Parts
- Tailgate liftgate lock actuator × 1 — Motorcraft SW-7050 or equivalent
- Plastic retaining clips (if damaged) × 3 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Ensure tailgate is closed but not latched (unlocked position)
- Open the driver's door to maintain interior light access if needed
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
Procedure
- 1Remove tailgate interior trim panelFrom inside the truck bed, locate the plastic trim panel on the inside of the tailgate. Use a flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool to carefully pry out the plastic retaining clips starting from the bottom corners. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing approximately 8-10 clips. Once all clips are released, lift the panel upward and away from the tailgate to disengage the top hooks.
- 2Disconnect actuator electrical connectorLocate the liftgate actuator electrical connector behind the trim panel on the driver's side of the tailgate. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight out to disconnect. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
- 3Access actuator mounting locationIdentify the liftgate actuator assembly mounted to the tailgate latch mechanism. The actuator is a black or gray plastic housing connected to metal linkage rods. You may need to peel back any foam insulation or protective covering to access the mounting bolts.
- 4Disconnect actuator linkage rodLocate the white plastic rod clip connecting the actuator arm to the latch mechanism. Use pliers or a pick tool to carefully pry the rod clip off the ball stud. Once the clip is removed, pull the linkage rod free from the actuator arm. Do not force; these clips can be brittle.
- 5Remove actuator mounting boltsRemove the three T30 Torx or 10mm mounting bolts securing the actuator to the tailgate latch assembly. Support the actuator as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Carefully maneuver the actuator out of the tailgate cavity.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Install new actuatorPosition the new liftgate actuator into the mounting location, aligning the bolt holes with the latch assembly. Thread in the three mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment, then tighten to specification using a torque wrench in a star pattern.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Reconnect actuator linkage rodAlign the actuator arm with the latch mechanism ball stud. Push the linkage rod onto the ball stud and snap the white plastic retaining clip into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the rod; it should not come free.
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorRoute the wiring harness as noted during removal and firmly push the electrical connector onto the actuator until you hear a distinct click. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged.
- 9Reconnect battery and test operationReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Before reinstalling the trim panel, test the liftgate release function using both the key fob and the tailgate release button. The actuator should produce an audible click and the tailgate should release freely. Test at least 3 times to verify consistent operation.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall tailgate trim panelPosition the trim panel at the top of the tailgate and engage the upper hooks first. Press firmly around the perimeter of the panel to snap all retaining clips back into place. Replace any damaged clips with new ones. Verify the panel is flush and secure.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
- Verify linkage rod is securely clipped and moves freely without binding
- Check that all mounting bolts are torqued to specification
- Confirm tailgate trim panel clips are all properly seated
Verification
- Test tailgate release using key fob remote - should unlock and release smoothly
- Test tailgate release using interior cab switch - should operate consistently
- Verify tailgate latches securely when closed and holds without rattling
- Check that tailgate handle returns to normal position after each use
- Confirm no warning lights appear on instrument cluster related to liftgate system
- Test power lock/unlock function multiple times to ensure reliable operation
