Parts

  • Front wiper motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Cowl panel clips (if damaged) × 6 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Move wiper arms to parked position if not already there
  4. Allow engine to cool completely if recently driven
  5. Gather all tools and new wiper motor assembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Open hood and locate battery in engine compartment. Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt and disconnect the cable. Secure cable away from battery post to prevent accidental reconnection.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove wiper arms
Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield. Locate and lift the retaining clip at the base of each wiper arm. Pull the wiper arm off the splined shaft. If stuck, use a battery terminal puller to carefully remove. Remove both driver and passenger side wiper arms.
  3. 3
    Remove cowl vent panel
Remove the rubber weatherstrip seal along the rear edge of the hood opening. Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry up and release the cowl panel retaining clips starting from one end. There are approximately 6-8 clips along the panel. Lift the cowl panel up and away from the vehicle, being careful not to break clips.
Cowl panel clips break easily. Apply steady pressure and work slowly to avoid damage.
  4. 4
    Disconnect washer hoses
Locate the windshield washer hoses connected to the washer nozzles in the cowl area. Squeeze the retaining tabs and pull the hoses free from the nozzles. Some washer fluid may drain from the hoses, so have shop towels ready.
  5. 5
    Access wiper motor assembly
With the cowl panel removed, you will have access to the wiper motor and linkage assembly. Locate the wiper motor on the driver side of the firewall. Clear any debris or leaves from the wiper motor area.
  6. 6
    Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the wiper motor. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the motor. Ensure the wiring harness is positioned clear of the mounting bolts.
  7. 7
    Remove wiper linkage cover
If equipped, remove the protective cover over the wiper linkage pivot points using a 10mm socket. This cover may be secured with 2-3 bolts. Set cover and bolts aside.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Disconnect wiper linkage from motor
Locate the wiper linkage arm connection to the motor output shaft. Using a 13mm socket, remove the nut securing the linkage to the motor crank arm. Carefully pry the linkage arm off the motor shaft ball joint using a flathead screwdriver. Support the linkage to prevent it from falling.
  9. 9
    Remove wiper motor mounting bolts
Using a 13mm socket, remove the three bolts securing the wiper motor to the firewall/cowl structure. Support the motor while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Remove wiper motor assembly
Carefully maneuver the wiper motor out of the cowl area, ensuring all electrical connectors and linkages are disconnected. Inspect the mounting area for corrosion or damage. Clean mounting surface if necessary.
  11. 11
    Install new wiper motor
Position the new wiper motor into the mounting location, aligning the mounting holes. Thread in the three mounting bolts by hand initially to ensure proper alignment, then torque to specification using a 13mm socket and torque wrench.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect wiper linkage
Align the wiper linkage arm with the motor crank arm ball joint. Press the linkage onto the ball joint firmly until it seats. Install the retaining nut and torque to 31 Nm (23 lb-ft) using a 13mm socket.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Reconnect electrical connector
Plug the electrical connector onto the wiper motor until it clicks into place. Ensure the locking tab is fully engaged and give a gentle tug to verify connection.
  14. 14
Reinstall linkage cover and cowl panel
If removed, reinstall the wiper linkage protective cover and torque bolts to specification. Position the cowl vent panel back onto the vehicle, aligning all mounting points. Press firmly to engage all retaining clips. Reinstall the rubber weatherstrip seal along the hood opening.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  15. 15
Reinstall wiper arms and reconnect battery
Install both wiper arms onto their respective shafts, ensuring proper alignment with the parked position marks on the cowl. Press down firmly and secure the retaining clips. Reconnect washer hoses to nozzles until they click. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all cowl panel clips are fully seated before testing
  2. Verify washer hoses are properly connected and not kinked
  3. Check that wiper arms are in the correct parked position before testing

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and test wiper operation in all speed settings (intermittent, low, high)
  • Verify wipers park correctly in the down position when turned off
  • Test washer fluid spray function to confirm hoses are connected properly
  • Listen for any unusual noises during wiper operation
  • Verify wiper blades make proper contact with windshield through full sweep range
  • Check that no wiper motor noise or grinding is present
  • Reset clock and radio presets as needed
