Procedure

  1. 1
    Engine oil and filter change
Position drain pan under oil pan. Remove oil drain plug from oil pan and allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). Install new crush washer on drain plug and reinstall. Remove oil filter (located on driver side of engine block) and verify old gasket came off with filter. Apply thin film of new oil to new filter gasket, install new filter hand-tight plus 3/4 turn. Fill engine with 7.5 quarts of Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend oil through oil filler cap on passenger valve cover.
  2. 2
    Engine air filter replacement
Open hood and locate air filter housing on driver side of engine bay. Release air box clips securing the cover. Remove cover and extract old air filter element. Clean inside of air box housing with clean rag to remove debris. Install new air filter element ensuring proper seating in housing. Reinstall cover and secure clips.
  3. 3
    Cabin air filter replacement
Open glove box and remove contents. Locate cabin air filter access panel on passenger side behind glove box. Remove cover screws and panel. Slide out old cabin air filter noting airflow direction arrow. Install new filter with airflow arrow pointing in same direction (toward rear of vehicle). Reinstall access panel and secure with screws.
  4. 4
Spark plug replacement - passenger side
Remove ignition coils from passenger side cylinder head by disconnecting electrical connectors and removing mounting bolts (one per coil). Use spark plug socket with extension to remove four spark plugs from passenger side. Inspect old plugs for wear, fouling, or damage. Gap new spark plugs to 0.051-0.057 inches and verify gap before installation. Install new plugs hand-tight, then torque to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft). Reinstall ignition coils and reconnect electrical connectors.
  5. 5
Spark plug replacement - driver side
Remove ignition coils from driver side cylinder head by disconnecting electrical connectors and removing mounting bolts. Access may be tighter on some cylinders due to brake master cylinder location. Use spark plug socket with extension to remove four spark plugs from driver side. Gap new spark plugs to 0.051-0.057 inches. Install new plugs hand-tight, then torque to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft). Reinstall ignition coils and reconnect electrical connectors.
  6. 6
    Rear differential fluid service
Locate rear differential drain plug on bottom of differential housing and fill plug on rear cover. Clean area around both plugs. Place drain pan underneath and remove drain plug. Allow fluid to drain completely (approximately 5 minutes). Inspect drained fluid for metal particles or abnormal contamination. Install drain plug with new gasket. Remove fill plug and use fluid pump to add 2.0 quarts of Motorcraft 75W-140 synthetic gear oil until fluid reaches bottom of fill hole. Install fill plug with new gasket.
  7. 7
    Front differential fluid service
Locate front differential on front axle assembly. Identify drain plug on bottom and fill plug on front or side of housing. Clean area around plugs thoroughly. Remove drain plug and allow 1.5 quarts to drain into pan. Inspect for contamination. Install drain plug with new gasket. Remove fill plug and add 1.5 quarts of 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil using fluid pump until fluid reaches bottom of fill hole. Install fill plug with new gasket.
  8. 8
    Transfer case fluid service
Locate transfer case mounted to rear of transmission on driver side. Identify drain plug on bottom and fill plug on rear or side. Clean area thoroughly. Remove drain plug and drain approximately 2.5 quarts of fluid. Inspect for metal particles or contamination. Install drain plug with new gasket. Remove fill plug and add 2.5 quarts of Motorcraft transfer case fluid using pump until fluid reaches bottom of fill hole. Install fill plug with new gasket.
  9. 9
    Automatic transmission fluid service
Locate transmission fluid pan under vehicle. This is a partial service - full flush requires special equipment. Remove transmission pan drain plug if equipped, or carefully loosen pan bolts starting from one corner to allow fluid to drain (approximately 5-6 quarts will drain). If removing pan, replace filter and clean magnet. Reinstall pan with new gasket. With engine off, add 5-6 quarts of Motorcraft MERCON LV through transmission dipstick tube. Start engine and check fluid level with engine at operating temperature in Park. Add fluid as needed to bring to proper level on dipstick.
Transmission fluid level must be checked with engine running at operating temperature. Incorrect level will cause transmission damage.
  10. 10
    Coolant flush and refill
Locate radiator drain petcock on driver side bottom of radiator. Place large drain pan underneath and open petcock to drain coolant. Remove radiator cap to speed draining. Once drained, close petcock. Fill cooling system with distilled water, run engine to operating temperature with heater on high, drain again. Repeat flush process once more. After final drain, close petcock and fill system with 50/50 mixture of Motorcraft Orange Coolant and distilled water (approximately 16 quarts total capacity). Fill radiator, then fill overflow reservoir to MAX line. Run engine to operating temperature and verify cooling fans cycle. Check level after cooling and top off as needed.
⚠️Do not remove radiator cap when engine is hot. System is pressurized and can cause severe burns.
  11. 11
    Brake fluid inspection and top-off
Locate brake fluid reservoir on driver side firewall near master cylinder. Clean area around cap before opening. Check fluid level against MIN/MAX marks on translucent reservoir. If low, add Motorcraft DOT 4 LV brake fluid to MAX line. Inspect fluid color - should be clear to light amber. If dark or contaminated, full brake fluid flush is recommended. Do not overfill.
Brake fluid damages paint. Wipe up any spills immediately. Do not allow fluid to contact painted surfaces.
  12. 12
    Complete vehicle inspection
With vehicle still raised, perform thorough undercarriage inspection. Check all suspension components for wear, damage, or leaking grease. Inspect all CV axle boots for tears or grease leaks. Check brake pads and rotors for wear (minimum pad thickness 3mm). Inspect exhaust system for leaks, damage, or loose hangers. Check all fluid drain plugs installed in previous steps for leaks. Inspect driveshafts and U-joints for play or damage. Check steering linkage and ball joints for wear. Examine frame and body for rust or damage.
ℹ️Document any wear items found during inspection for future service planning. Replace worn components before they fail.
  13. 13
    Wheel reinstallation
Clean wheel mounting surfaces on hubs with wire brush to remove rust and debris. Reinstall all four wheels, threading lug nuts by hand first to prevent cross-threading. Using torque wrench, torque lug nuts to 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) in star pattern (not circular pattern). Lower vehicle from jack stands carefully, one end at a time. With vehicle on ground, re-torque all lug nuts in star pattern to final specification of 140 Nm (103 lb-ft).

Reassembly

  1. Verify all fill plugs, drain plugs, and caps are properly installed and tightened
  2. Double-check that all electrical connectors for ignition coils are fully seated and locked
  3. Ensure air filter housing cover and cabin filter panel are properly secured
  4. Verify oil filler cap is installed on valve cover
  5. Check that radiator cap and coolant overflow cap are properly installed
  6. Confirm all tools and materials have been removed from engine bay and undercarriage

Verification
