Replace the AC high pressure switch located on the AC discharge line near the condenser to restore proper AC system pressure monitoring and compressor protection.
Warnings
⚠️AC system contains refrigerant under high pressure. Always recover refrigerant using approved equipment before opening any AC line connections.
⚠R-134a refrigerant and PAG oil can cause skin and eye irritation. Wear safety glasses and gloves during all AC work.
⚠Venting refrigerant to atmosphere is illegal under EPA regulations and harmful to the environment.
ℹ️This procedure requires AC system recovery and recharge. If you lack proper equipment, have this service performed by a qualified technician.

Parts
- AC high pressure switch × 1 — Use OEM specification
- R-134a refrigerant × 1 — As needed to refill system
- PAG 46 oil × 1 — For AC system
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn off engine and allow to cool completely
- Gather all tools and parts before beginning work
- Verify you have proper AC recovery and recharge equipment available
Procedure
- 1Recover AC refrigerantConnect AC recovery machine to the service ports on the AC lines. Follow the recovery machine manufacturer's instructions to safely recover all refrigerant from the system. Record the amount of refrigerant and oil recovered for proper recharging later.
- 2Access the AC high pressure switchOpen the hood and locate the AC high pressure switch on the discharge line between the compressor and condenser. On the 5.0L V8, this is typically located on the passenger side of the engine bay near the AC condenser. The switch has a two-wire electrical connector.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull it straight off the high pressure switch. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
- 4Remove the high pressure switchUsing a 10mm socket or appropriate wrench, carefully unthread the high pressure switch from the AC line. Turn counterclockwise to remove. Have a rag ready to catch any residual oil that may drip from the port.
- 5Inspect and clean the portInspect the threaded port in the AC line for any damage or debris. Clean the threads with a clean, lint-free cloth. Check the condition of the O-ring sealing surface inside the port.
- 6Install new high pressure switchInstall the new high pressure switch by hand, turning clockwise until finger-tight. Ensure the switch threads engage smoothly without cross-threading. If the new switch includes an O-ring, verify it is properly seated.
- 7Torque the switch to specificationUsing a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten the high pressure switch to 20.0 Nm (15.0 lb-ft). Do not over-tighten as this can damage the threads or crack the switch body.⚠Over-torquing the switch can cause cracks in the plastic body leading to refrigerant leaks.Torque specAC Line Fittings20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the new high pressure switch until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked.
- 9Vacuum test the AC systemConnect the vacuum pump to the AC service ports and evacuate the system to at least 29 inches of mercury vacuum. Hold the vacuum for a minimum of 30 minutes. Monitor the gauge - if vacuum holds steady, the system is leak-free and ready for recharge.ℹ️If the system will not hold vacuum, there is a leak that must be repaired before recharging.
- 10Recharge the AC systemUsing the AC manifold gauge set and refrigerant scale, recharge the system with the correct amount of R-134a refrigerant as specified on the underhood AC specification label (typically 1.75-2.0 lbs for F-150). Add the appropriate amount of PAG 46 oil to replace what was lost during the repair.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
- Double-check that the high pressure switch is torqued to specification
- Ensure no tools or parts are left in the engine bay
Verification
- Start the engine and turn the AC to maximum cooling
- Verify the AC compressor engages and disengages normally
- Check for proper cold air output from the vents
- Using the AC manifold gauges, verify system pressures are within normal range (typically 25-45 PSI low side, 200-250 PSI high side at idle with ambient temperature 70-80°F)
- Inspect the high pressure switch connection for any signs of refrigerant leaks using an electronic leak detector or soap solution
- Verify the high pressure switch functions by observing compressor cutout if pressure exceeds safe limits
- Test AC performance during a short test drive to confirm normal operation
