Install a factory-style backup camera in the tailgate handle assembly, routing wiring through the truck body to connect to the Sync/MyFord Touch display system.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect battery negative terminal before beginning electrical work to prevent short circuits and airbag deployment.
ℹ️Verify your F-150 is equipped with Sync/MyFord Touch system with backup camera capability - not all trim levels support this feature.
⚠Do not force panel clips - use proper trim tools to avoid breaking mounting tabs.

Parts
- Backup camera assembly with tailgate handle × 1 — Use OEM Ford part or quality aftermarket
- Camera wiring harness (if not included with camera) × 1 — Ford DC3Z-19G490-A or equivalent
- Tailgate rubber grommet × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Body panel grommets (assorted) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Lower tailgate fully to access handle assembly
- Verify backup camera compatibility with existing head unit (Sync system must support camera input)
- Inspect camera prep package presence - some trucks have pre-run wiring from factory
Procedure
- 1Remove tailgate handle assemblyOpen tailgate. Using T30 Torx driver, remove two bolts securing the tailgate handle bezel from inside the tailgate. Carefully pull the handle assembly outward to release clips. Disconnect existing wiring connector if present (tailgate ajar switch). Note orientation of handle for reinstallation.
- 2Install camera into new handle assemblyIf camera is separate from handle, install camera module into the new tailgate handle assembly following manufacturer instructions. Route camera wire through the back of handle assembly. Ensure rubber gasket is properly seated around camera lens to prevent water intrusion. Verify camera orientation matches backup view (typically logo/connector at bottom).
- 3Remove tailgate interior trim panelFrom inside tailgate, use panel removal tools to carefully pry around perimeter of plastic trim panel. Release retaining clips working from bottom to top. Disconnect any electrical connectors for tailgate accessories (lock switch, etc.). Set panel aside on clean surface to avoid scratching.
- 4Route camera wiring through tailgateFeed camera wiring harness through the existing tailgate handle opening from outside. Route wire down through tailgate internal structure toward driver side hinge area. Secure wire to internal structure using existing clips or zip ties to prevent rattling. Leave adequate slack near handle for tailgate operation.⚠Ensure wiring does not interfere with tailgate latch mechanism or lock actuator operation.
- 5Install new camera handle assemblyConnect camera wiring connector to harness routed through tailgate. Position new handle assembly with integrated camera into tailgate opening. Ensure rubber seal is properly positioned. Align mounting holes and secure with two T30 Torx bolts from inside tailgate. Do not fully tighten yet - verify proper alignment first.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Remove cab rear panel and headliner trimFrom inside cab, carefully pull down rear headliner edge at driver side to access roof area. Remove driver side rear interior B-pillar trim using panel tools. Remove lower rear panel trim behind rear seat on driver side. This provides access to route wiring from tailgate area to front of vehicle.
- 7Route wiring from tailgate to cabLocate the rubber grommet where tailgate wiring harness enters cab body (driver side near tailgate hinge). If no camera prep wiring exists, carefully create small opening in existing grommet or install new grommet for camera wire. Use fish tape to pull camera wire from tailgate through body channel into cab area. Work wire along existing harness routing behind trim panels.⚠Protect wiring from sharp metal edges using grommets and ensure no routing near moving parts or heat sources.
- 8Route wiring to radio/Sync moduleContinue routing camera wire along driver side behind interior panels toward dashboard. Follow existing wiring harnesses. Route wire behind rear seat, under door sill trim, and up A-pillar area toward instrument panel. Leave adequate length to reach behind radio/Sync display unit.
- 9Access Sync/radio moduleRemove center stack trim panel using panel tools - release clips at edges. Remove four 10mm bolts or T20 screws securing radio/Sync unit (varies by trim level). Carefully pull unit forward enough to access rear connectors. Do not disconnect existing harnesses unless necessary.
- 10Connect camera to Sync systemLocate backup camera input connector on rear of Sync module (typically labeled or refer to wiring diagram). Connect camera harness to appropriate input connector. If using aftermarket camera, ensure proper RCA or specific Ford connector adapter is used. Verify connection is fully seated and secure.
- 11Test camera function before final assemblyReconnect battery negative terminal temporarily. Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to start). Shift transmission to Reverse. Verify camera image appears on Sync display screen. Check image orientation and quality. Verify reverse guidelines appear if equipped. If no image, check all connections and wiring routing.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 12Secure and reinstall interior componentsDisconnect battery again. Secure all wiring with zip ties or clips along routing path, ensuring no interference with moving parts. Reinstall Sync/radio module and secure with mounting bolts. Reinstall center stack trim panel ensuring all clips engage. Reinstall all interior trim panels, B-pillar covers, and headliner edge in reverse order of removal.
- 13Reinstall tailgate trim and final checksVerify camera handle assembly alignment and tighten mounting bolts to specification. Reinstall tailgate interior trim panel, ensuring all clips engage properly. Reconnect any tailgate accessory electrical connectors. Close and latch tailgate, verify handle operation and proper sealing.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Double-check all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
- Verify all interior trim panels are fully seated with clips engaged
- Ensure no wiring is pinched between panels or near moving components
- Reconnect battery negative terminal and torque to specification
Verification
- Start engine and shift to Reverse - backup camera image should display immediately on Sync screen
- Verify image is properly oriented (not upside down or mirrored incorrectly)
- Check that reverse guideline overlays appear if system is equipped
- Test tailgate handle operation - should open and close smoothly without binding
- Inspect camera lens from outside - should be clean and properly sealed
- Open and close tailgate several times to verify wiring has adequate slack and doesn't pull
- Verify all interior trim panels are secure with no rattles
- Check for any warning lights on instrument cluster related to camera or electrical system
