Parts
- Negative battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification - includes integrated ground straps
- Battery terminal protectant spray × 1 — Optional corrosion prevention
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Allow engine to cool if recently driven
- Identify all ground connection points: battery negative post, engine block ground, and chassis ground locations
Procedure
- 1Remove negative battery terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Do not remove the bolt completely - just loosen until the terminal clamp can be spread and removed from the battery post. If terminal is stuck, use a battery terminal puller to avoid damaging the post.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove battery hold-down (if necessary)If the negative cable cannot be fully removed with battery in place, remove the battery hold-down bolt using a 13mm socket. Carefully lift the battery out of the tray and set aside in a safe location.⚠Battery weighs approximately 40-50 lbs - use proper lifting techniqueTorque specBattery Hold-Down Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 3Locate and access engine block groundTrace the negative cable from the battery to the engine block. On the 5.0L Coyote, the primary engine ground is located on the passenger side of the engine block near the starter. You may need to remove the engine cover for better access.
- 4Remove engine block ground connectionUsing a 13mm socket with extension, remove the ground cable bolt securing the negative cable to the engine block. Note the exact position and orientation of any ground straps or multiple terminals at this location.ℹ️Multiple ground straps may share this mounting point - photograph connections before removalTorque specGround Cable Bolt17 Nm (13 lb-ft)
- 5Remove chassis ground connectionsLocate the chassis ground points where the negative cable or ground straps connect to the frame or body. These are typically found near the battery tray and on the firewall. Remove all ground strap bolts using a 13mm socket.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 6Remove old negative cableOnce all connections are disconnected, remove the complete negative battery cable assembly from the vehicle. Inspect cable routing and any clips or retainers used to secure the cable along its path.
- 7Clean all connection pointsUsing a wire brush, thoroughly clean all ground connection points on the engine block, chassis, and battery post. Remove all corrosion, dirt, and oxidation until bare metal is visible. Clean terminals on the new cable as well. A baking soda and water solution can neutralize any acid corrosion.ℹ️Clean metal-to-metal contact is critical for proper grounding - this step cannot be skipped
- 8Route new negative cableRoute the new negative battery cable along the same path as the original, ensuring it does not contact any sharp edges, moving parts, or hot surfaces. Use all original clips and retainers to secure the cable.
- 9Install chassis ground connectionsConnect all chassis ground straps to their mounting points on the frame and body. Ensure clean metal-to-metal contact. Torque all ground strap bolts to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specGround Strap Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 10Install engine block ground connectionAttach the negative cable and any associated ground straps to the engine block mounting point. Ensure all terminals are properly stacked in the correct order as photographed during removal. Torque the ground cable bolt to specification.⚠Improper torque on engine ground can cause starting issues and electrical problemsTorque specGround Cable Bolt17 Nm (13 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall battery (if removed)If battery was removed, carefully place it back in the tray ensuring proper orientation with terminals facing the correct direction. Install and torque the battery hold-down bolt to specification.Torque specBattery Hold-Down Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 12Connect negative battery terminalPlace the negative terminal clamp over the battery post. Ensure it seats fully and is oriented correctly. Tighten the terminal bolt to specification using a torque wrench. Apply dielectric grease or terminal protectant spray to prevent corrosion.⚠Do not overtighten terminal bolt - this can crack the battery post or damage the terminalTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover if removed
- Verify all tools are removed from engine compartment
- Reset power windows by holding down button until fully closed, then holding for 2 seconds
- Reset radio presets and clock as needed
Verification
- Verify engine cranks and starts normally - poor ground connections will cause slow cranking or no-start conditions
- Check that all electrical accessories function properly (lights, radio, power windows, etc.)
- Inspect all ground connection points to ensure they are tight and show no signs of looseness
- Verify battery terminal is secure and does not move when lightly pulled
- Check for any warning lights on the dashboard that may indicate electrical issues
