This procedure covers the replacement of the headlight dimmer switch on the steering column of a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L V8 Coyote engine.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 10 minutes before working on steering column to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge.
⚠Do not rotate the clockspring mechanism while the steering wheel is removed or it may become misaligned, requiring replacement.
⚠Keep ignition in the OFF position throughout this procedure to prevent module faults.
ℹ️The dimmer switch on this vehicle is part of the multi-function switch assembly on the steering column.

Parts
- Headlight dimmer switch × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering column trim screws (if damaged) × 4 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Turn steering wheel to the straight-ahead position
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal using 8mm socket
- Wait minimum 10 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Gather all tools and replacement parts
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery ground cableUsing an 8mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt and remove the cable from the battery. Isolate the cable away from the battery terminal. Wait a minimum of 10 minutes before proceeding to allow the airbag system capacitors to fully discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower steering column coversInside the vehicle, locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the two Phillips screws at the bottom of the cover and two screws on the sides. Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column and set aside. Note the position of any wire harness clips attached to the cover.
- 3Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the upper steering column cover retention screws (typically two at the bottom edge). Remove these screws and gently lift the upper cover over the steering column, being careful of the ignition lock cylinder. If equipped with tilt steering, adjust the column to the lowest position for easier access.
- 4Locate multi-function switch assemblyWith the covers removed, identify the multi-function switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. This assembly houses both the turn signal and dimmer switch functions. Note the electrical connector routing and any retaining clips securing the harness to the column.
- 5Disconnect multi-function switch electrical connectorsLocate the main electrical connector(s) for the multi-function switch assembly. Press the locking tab on each connector and carefully pull them straight out from the switch. There may be one or two connectors depending on vehicle options. Note connector orientation for reassembly.
- 6Remove wire harness retaining clipsCut or carefully remove any wire ties or clips securing the switch harness to the steering column. Take note of clip locations for reinstallation. Do not damage the harness insulation or pull excessively on wires.
- 7Remove multi-function switch mounting screwsUsing a T20 Torx bit, remove the two screws securing the multi-function switch assembly to the steering column. The screws are typically located on the front face of the switch housing. Support the switch assembly as you remove the final screw to prevent it from dropping.
- 8Remove multi-function switch from columnWith the mounting screws removed, gently slide the multi-function switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch slides off the column shaft. Be careful not to disturb the clockspring connector behind the switch if it remains attached to the column.
- 9Install new multi-function switch assemblyPosition the new multi-function switch assembly onto the steering column shaft, ensuring it is properly aligned with the mounting holes. The switch should slide smoothly onto the column. Verify the dimmer switch lever is in the correct position (typically center/off position) before securing.
- 10Install switch mounting screwsInsert the two T20 Torx mounting screws through the switch assembly and thread them into the steering column. Tighten the screws to 8.0 Nm (6 lb-ft) in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the switch. Do not overtighten as this may crack the plastic housing.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect the electrical connector(s) to the multi-function switch assembly, ensuring they are fully seated and the locking tabs click into place. Tug gently on each connector to verify it is secure. Route the harness as it was originally positioned.
- 12Secure wire harnessReinstall wire harness clips or use new wire ties to secure the switch harness to the steering column in the original locations. Ensure there is adequate slack and no interference with moving parts of the steering column or tilt mechanism.
- 13Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover over the column and secure with the original screws. Then position the lower cover, ensuring all tabs are properly aligned, and install the retention screws. Verify both covers fit flush with no gaps.
- 14Reconnect batteryReturn to the engine bay and reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Tighten the battery terminal bolt to 6.0 Nm (4 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this may damage the battery post or terminal.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify steering column covers are properly aligned and all screws are tight
- Check that the dimmer switch lever operates smoothly through full range of motion
- Confirm no wires are pinched between covers or near moving components
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify instrument cluster illuminates with no warning lights related to airbag or steering systems
- Test dimmer switch operation by pulling toward you from the off position - headlights should flash to high beam
- Push dimmer switch lever forward to engage high beams, verify high beam indicator illuminates on instrument cluster
- Pull dimmer switch lever back to return to low beams, verify high beam indicator turns off
- Cycle dimmer switch through all positions multiple times to ensure smooth operation and proper function
- If equipped, verify auto high-beam functions operate correctly
- Test all other multi-function switch operations including turn signals, wipers, and washer to ensure no interference
- Take a short test drive to verify all headlight dimmer functions work properly under normal driving conditions
