Parts
- Fuel filler cap × 1 — Ford FL3Z-9030-A or equivalent OEM cap
Preparation
- Verify the correct replacement cap type for your vehicle (traditional threaded or capless system insert)
- Inspect the fuel filler neck for damage or debris before installing new cap
Procedure
- 1Remove old fuel capFor traditional threaded caps: Turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it releases. For capless systems: The cap is an internal flapper door assembly that requires releasing the spring-loaded door and twisting the internal cap mechanism counterclockwise to remove.
- 2Inspect filler neck seal surfaceExamine the fuel filler neck opening for dirt, debris, or damage to the sealing surface. Clean with a lint-free cloth if necessary. Check for cracks or corrosion that might prevent proper sealing.
- 3Install new fuel capFor traditional threaded caps: Align the cap with the filler neck threads and turn clockwise until you hear 3-4 clicks or the ratcheting mechanism engages. For capless systems: Insert the replacement cap assembly, align the tabs, and turn clockwise until it locks into place and sits flush with the filler door opening.
Reassembly
- No additional reassembly required for this procedure
Verification
- Start the engine and verify that no check engine light illuminates due to EVAP system leak codes (P0455, P0456, or P0457)
- Visually confirm the fuel cap is seated properly and flush with the filler neck or capless door
- For traditional caps, ensure the tether is properly connected and not damaged
