This procedure covers the replacement of a single headlight bulb on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, involving removal of the headlight assembly for access.

Warnings

Allow headlights to cool for at least 10 minutes before starting work to avoid burns from hot bulb and housing
Never touch the glass portion of the new halogen bulb with bare hands as oils will cause premature failure and hot spots
ℹ️Headlight assembly does not need to be fully removed, only loosened and pivoted forward for bulb access

Tools required

8mm socket or nut driverEssential
Ratchet with extensionEssential
Flat blade screwdriver
Nitrile gloves
Torque wrench (5-50 Nm range)Essential

Parts

  • H13/9008 Headlight Bulb × 1 — H13 or 9008 bulb type

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn off headlights and ignition, remove key
  3. Allow headlights to cool for at least 10 minutes if recently used
  4. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate headlight assembly mounting bolts
Identify the two 8mm mounting bolts securing the headlight assembly from the top. These are accessible from the engine bay directly above the headlight housing.
  2. 2
    Remove upper mounting bolts
Using an 8mm socket with ratchet and extension, remove both upper mounting bolts from the headlight assembly. Keep bolts in a safe location for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts42 Nm (31 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Pull headlight assembly forward
Carefully pull the headlight assembly forward approximately 2-3 inches. The assembly will pivot on the lower mounting tabs but remain attached to the vehicle. This provides sufficient access to the bulb socket at the rear of the housing.
  4. 4
    Disconnect bulb connector
Locate the electrical connector on the back of the headlight bulb. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb socket. Do not twist or pull on the wiring harness.
  5. 5
    Remove bulb retaining ring
Rotate the bulb retaining ring counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it releases from the housing. Remove the retaining ring and set aside.
    Torque spec
    Bulb Retaining Ring5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove old bulb
Carefully pull the old H13 bulb straight out of the housing. Avoid touching the reflector inside the housing. Inspect the bulb socket for any corrosion or damage.
  7. 7
    Install new bulb
Wearing clean nitrile gloves or using a clean cloth, handle the new H13 bulb only by the plastic base. Insert the bulb into the housing, ensuring the alignment tabs match the socket grooves. Push firmly until the bulb seats completely.
Do not touch the glass envelope of the new bulb; use gloves or hold only the plastic base
  8. 8
    Secure bulb retaining ring
Place the retaining ring back onto the bulb socket, align the tabs, and rotate clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks into place. The ring should be snug but not over-tightened.
    Torque spec
    Bulb Retaining Ring5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the bulb socket until it clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by giving it a gentle tug.
  10. 10
    Reposition headlight assembly
Carefully push the headlight assembly back into its mounting position, ensuring the lower tabs align properly with their mounting points and the assembly sits flush against the vehicle body.
  11. 11
    Install upper mounting bolts
Thread both upper mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment, then torque to specification using a torque wrench. Alternate between bolts to ensure even seating.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts42 Nm (31 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify headlight assembly is properly seated and aligned with body panels before final torque
  2. Ensure no wiring is pinched between headlight assembly and vehicle body
  3. Check that all connections are secure and retaining ring is properly locked

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and activate headlights to verify both low beam and high beam function properly
  • Check for proper beam pattern alignment; headlights should point straight ahead without excessive upward or downward angle
  • Verify no warning lights appear on instrument cluster related to exterior lighting
  • Visually inspect headlight assembly from outside vehicle to confirm proper seating and panel gaps are even
