This procedure covers the replacement of the ignition switch assembly on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, including removal of steering column covers and disconnection of electrical components.
Warnings
⚠️Always disconnect the negative battery cable and wait 15 minutes before working on ignition components to prevent airbag deployment and electrical short circuits.
⚠Do not force the ignition switch connector release tabs as they are fragile and break easily. Use proper technique to avoid connector damage.
⚠The steering column must not be adjusted during this procedure once disassembled. Movement can damage internal components.
ℹ️Keep all fasteners organized by location as some appear similar but have different thread pitches or lengths.

Parts
- Ignition switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
- Steering column cover screws (if damaged) × 4 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key completely
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 15 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Adjust steering wheel to full down and full extended position for maximum working clearance
- Remove knee bolster panel below steering column by removing four retaining screws
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverLocate and remove the cover screws securing the lower steering column cover. There are typically four screws around the perimeter. Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column, disengaging any retaining clips. Set aside in clean area.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 2Remove upper steering column coverRemove the cover screws securing the upper steering column cover. Lift the upper cover up and over the steering column shaft, being careful not to scratch the instrument cluster lens. Watch for the ignition lock cylinder bezel that may be integrated with the upper cover on some models.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect ignition switch electrical connectorLocate the main ignition switch electrical connector on the right side of the steering column. Press the connector lock tab while pulling the connector straight back away from the switch. If equipped with a secondary locking clip, slide it out first using a small flat-blade screwdriver. Do not pull on wires.⚠The connector lock tab is fragile. Apply pressure only to the tab itself, not the connector body, to avoid breaking the locking mechanism.
- 4Remove ignition switch mounting hardwareUsing a Torx T20 driver, remove the two ignition switch mounting screws. These screws are typically located on the right side of the steering column shroud. Keep these screws as they will be reused with the new switch unless replacement hardware is provided.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 5Remove ignition switch assemblyWith mounting screws removed, carefully slide the ignition switch assembly straight back away from the lock cylinder actuator. The switch has a shaft engagement that requires straight-line removal. Do not rotate or twist the switch during removal. Note the orientation and position of the switch for installation reference.⚠The actuator shaft inside the switch must be aligned during removal. Angling the switch can damage the internal actuator mechanism.
- 6Inspect lock cylinder actuatorWith the switch removed, inspect the lock cylinder actuator rod for wear, cracks, or damage. This rod should move smoothly when the key is turned. Check for debris or corrosion in the actuator housing. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary. Verify the actuator returns to the LOCK position when the key is removed.ℹ️If the actuator rod is damaged or binding, the lock cylinder assembly may also require replacement, which is a separate procedure.
- 7Prepare new ignition switchRemove new ignition switch from packaging and verify it matches the original part. Check that the internal actuator slider moves freely through all positions. Some switches come with a locking pin that must be removed after installation - verify orientation before proceeding. Apply small amount of dielectric grease to connector terminals if desired.
- 8Install new ignition switchAlign the new ignition switch actuator with the lock cylinder actuator rod. The switch must be in the LOCK position (verify by ensuring key would be removable if installed). Slide the switch straight onto the actuator rod until it seats flush against the column housing. Verify proper engagement by gently attempting to rotate the actuator - it should move the lock cylinder.⚠Ensure the switch is in LOCK position before installation. Installing in wrong position will cause key operation problems and potential damage.
- 9Secure ignition switch mounting screwsInstall the two Torx mounting screws by hand, starting threads carefully to avoid cross-threading. Once both screws are hand-tight, torque them to specification in a crossing pattern. Do not overtighten as the switch housing is plastic and can crack.⚠Switch mounting screw torque is critical - overtightening will crack the plastic housing, while undertightening can cause switch movement and electrical intermittent issues.Torque specSwitch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the ignition switch electrical connector and push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. If equipped with a secondary lock, slide it back into locked position. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked - it should not pull free. Ensure wiring is routed properly and not pinched.
- 11Test switch operation before reassemblyTemporarily reconnect the negative battery cable. Insert the key and verify smooth operation through all positions: LOCK, ACC, ON, and START. The key should only be removable in LOCK position. All dash warning lights should illuminate in ON position. Verify starter cranks in START position. If operation is not correct, disconnect battery and recheck switch alignment and installation.⚠️Ensure transmission is in PARK and parking brake is set before testing starter operation.
- 12Reinstall steering column coversDisconnect battery cable again for final reassembly. Position upper steering column cover over the column, ensuring ignition lock bezel aligns properly. Install and hand-tighten cover screws. Position lower cover and engage retaining clips, then install and hand-tighten cover screws. Torque all cover screws to specification in a cross pattern.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall knee bolster panelPosition the knee bolster panel under the steering column and align mounting holes. Install the four retaining screws and tighten securely. Verify panel is flush and does not rattle.
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column covers are properly seated with no gaps before final tightening
- Verify no tools or parts are left in the steering column area
- Route all wiring back to original positions without pinching or stretching
- Double-check that all fasteners have been reinstalled and properly torqued
Verification
- Reconnect negative battery cable and verify no warning lights remain illuminated after startup
- Test ignition switch through all positions multiple times: LOCK, ACC, ON, START
- Verify key can only be removed in LOCK position and steering wheel locks properly
- Confirm all accessories operate in ACC position (radio, power windows)
- Verify all warning lights illuminate in ON position and extinguish after engine start
- Test that engine cranks and starts normally in START position
- Check that steering column does not exhibit any looseness or unusual noises
- Verify all dashboard warning systems function normally with no new fault codes
