This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the oil level sensor on the 2011-2014 Ford F-150 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, located on the oil pan.

Warnings

Perform this repair with a cold engine to avoid burns from hot oil and components
Some oil spillage is normal when removing the sensor; have drain pan ready
ℹ️The oil level sensor on the 5.0L Coyote is located on the driver side of the oil pan, accessible from underneath

Tools required

Socket set (metric)Essential
Torque wrench (10-20 Nm range)Essential
Oil drain pan
Wire brush
Electrical contact cleaner
Shop rags

Parts

  • Oil level sensor × 1 — Motorcraft DY1267 or equivalent
  • O-ring seal for sensor × 1 — Usually included with sensor

Fluids

  • Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend — 0.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is cold and vehicle has been sitting for at least 2 hours to allow oil to settle
  2. Raise vehicle safely on lift or jack stands with adequate clearance to access underside
  3. Locate oil level sensor on driver side of oil pan, approximately mid-pan position
  4. Clean area around sensor with wire brush to remove dirt and debris
  5. Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent fault codes during sensor disconnection

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the oil level sensor
Position yourself under the vehicle with adequate lighting. Locate the oil level sensor on the driver side of the oil pan. The sensor has an electrical connector on top and threads into the pan.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the release tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull it away from the oil level sensor. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
  3. 3
    Position drain pan
Place an oil drain pan directly beneath the oil level sensor. Expect approximately 0.25-0.5 quarts of oil to drain when the sensor is removed, depending on current oil level.
  4. 4
    Remove oil level sensor
Using the appropriate socket, carefully loosen and remove the oil level sensor by turning counterclockwise. Allow oil to drain into the catch pan. Remove the sensor completely and inspect the mounting hole threads in the oil pan for damage or debris.
Do not overtighten or force the sensor as the aluminum oil pan threads can strip easily

    Inspect and clean mounting area
Wipe the mounting area on the oil pan clean with a shop rag. Inspect the threads in the oil pan for damage. Check the removed sensor for metal debris or sludge that might indicate internal engine issues.
  6. 6
    Prepare new sensor
Remove the new oil level sensor from packaging. Verify it matches the old sensor configuration. Check that the O-ring seal is properly seated in the sensor groove. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil.
  7. 7
    Install new oil level sensor
Thread the new oil level sensor into the oil pan by hand, turning clockwise. Ensure it threads smoothly without cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench to tighten to specification.

  8. 8
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the new oil level sensor until you hear or feel a positive click, indicating it is fully seated and locked.
  9. 9
Check and top off engine oil
Lower the vehicle. Check the engine oil level using the dipstick. Add Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend oil as needed to bring level to the proper mark, accounting for oil lost during sensor replacement.
  10. 10
    Reconnect battery and clear codes
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and verify the oil level warning light functions properly during the bulb check cycle and then extinguishes. Use a scan tool to clear any stored fault codes if necessary.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure electrical connector is fully seated and locked onto sensor
  2. Verify no oil leaks around sensor after installation
  3. Double-check oil level is correct before returning vehicle to service

Verification

  • Start engine and confirm oil pressure warning light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds
  • Verify oil level warning system functions correctly through instrument cluster
  • Check for oil leaks around sensor with engine running and at operating temperature
  • Scan for diagnostic trouble codes related to oil level sensor and verify none are present
  • Test drive vehicle and confirm no warning lights illuminate
