This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve on the 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, typically located on the passenger side valve cover.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting this procedure to avoid burns from hot engine components.
ℹ️The PCV valve is under vacuum when the engine is running. Do not attempt removal with engine running.

Parts
- PCV valve × 1 — Motorcraft EV-277 or equivalent
- PCV valve grommet (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
Procedure
- 1Locate the PCV valveThe PCV valve is located on the passenger side valve cover of the 5.0L Coyote engine. It is installed in a rubber grommet and has a vacuum hose connected to the intake manifold. Identify the valve and trace the connecting hose to familiarize yourself with the routing.
- 2Disconnect the PCV hoseUsing needle-nose pliers or your fingers, carefully squeeze and release the clamp securing the PCV vacuum hose to the valve. Slide the clamp back along the hose, then gently twist and pull the hose off the PCV valve nipple. If the hose is stuck, carefully use a flat-blade screwdriver to break the seal, being careful not to damage the valve or hose.
- 3Remove the PCV valveGrasp the PCV valve body firmly and twist it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn while pulling upward. The valve should release from the rubber grommet in the valve cover. If resistance is encountered, gently rock the valve side-to-side while pulling to break it free. Do not use excessive force as this may damage the grommet or valve cover.
- 4Inspect the grommetWith the PCV valve removed, inspect the rubber grommet remaining in the valve cover. Check for cracks, hardening, or deterioration. The grommet should be pliable and intact. If the grommet is damaged, use needle-nose pliers to carefully extract it from the valve cover and replace with a new grommet.
- 5Install the new PCV valveApply a small amount of oil to the base of the new PCV valve to ease installation. Insert the valve into the grommet with a gentle twisting motion, pushing firmly until it seats completely. The valve should be snug but not require excessive force. Ensure the valve is fully seated and the grommet has not rolled or pinched.Torque specPCV Valve8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Reconnect the vacuum hosePush the vacuum hose firmly onto the PCV valve nipple until it bottoms out. Slide the hose clamp into position approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the hose. Ensure the connection is secure by gently tugging on the hose to verify it will not pull off.
- 7Verify installationVisually inspect the PCV valve installation to ensure it is fully seated in the grommet and the vacuum hose is properly connected. Check that no tools or shop towels have been left in the engine compartment.
Reassembly
- No disassembly was required for this procedure beyond the PCV valve itself
- Ensure all connections are secure and the PCV valve is fully seated
Verification
- Start the engine and listen for any vacuum leaks (hissing sounds) around the PCV valve area
- Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature and verify smooth idle quality
- With engine idling, carefully place your finger over the open end of the PCV valve (if accessible) or pinch the hose; you should feel strong vacuum suction indicating proper operation
- Check for any oil leaks around the valve cover grommet after a short test drive
