Parts
- Aftermarket radio head unit with installation kit × 1 — Dash kit for Ford F-150 2011-2014
- Wiring harness adapter × 1 — Ford to aftermarket harness adapter
- Antenna adapter × 1 — Motorola to aftermarket antenna adapter
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts and airbag deployment
- Wait at least 5 minutes after battery disconnect for airbag system to discharge
- Verify replacement radio fitment and gather all adapter harnesses before beginning disassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove center dash trim panelUsing plastic trim tools, carefully pry the center dash trim panel starting from the bottom edge near the climate controls. Work your way around the perimeter releasing 8-10 retaining clips. Pull the panel forward gently and disconnect any electrical connectors behind it (hazard switch, climate control connectors if applicable). Set panel aside in safe location.
- 2Remove radio mounting boltsWith trim panel removed, locate four 7mm bolts securing the factory radio unit (two on each side of the radio chassis). Use 1/4-inch ratchet with 7mm socket and extension to remove all four bolts. Keep bolts organized for reassembly or adapter kit installation.
- 3Extract factory radio unitCarefully pull the radio unit straight out from the dashboard cavity approximately 4-6 inches until you can access the rear connections. Support the unit weight to prevent stress on connectors. You should see two large wiring harnesses, the antenna connection, and possibly USB/auxiliary connections.
- 4Disconnect wiring harnessesPress the release tab on the primary wiring harness connector (large gray or black connector) and pull straight back to disconnect. Repeat for secondary harness if equipped. Disconnect the antenna connection by pulling straight out - it should release with moderate force. Disconnect any USB, auxiliary, or satellite radio connections present. Remove factory radio completely.
- 5Prepare wiring harness adapterConnect the aftermarket wiring harness adapter to the factory Ford connectors you just disconnected. Match wire colors according to adapter instructions and secure all connections with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing if soldering. Typical connections include constant 12V (yellow), switched 12V (red), ground (black), illumination, and 8 speaker wires. Verify all connections are secure.
- 6Install antenna adapterConnect the Motorola-style factory antenna plug to the antenna adapter, then connect the adapter's standard output to the aftermarket radio antenna input. Ensure connection is firm and seated completely.
- 7Prepare new radio unitIf required by installation kit, mount radio mounting brackets or cage to the new head unit according to manufacturer instructions. Connect the wiring harness adapter and antenna adapter to the rear of the new radio unit. Do not fully insert radio into dash yet.
- 8Test new radio operationReconnect negative battery terminal temporarily. Turn ignition to ACC or ON position without starting engine. Verify new radio powers on, displays correctly, and audio functions work. Test AM/FM reception and all speaker outputs. If equipped, test Bluetooth, USB, and auxiliary inputs. Once verified functional, turn off ignition and disconnect battery again.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 9Install new radio into dashCarefully route all wiring harnesses and adapters behind the new radio to avoid pinching. Slide radio unit into the dashboard opening, aligning with mounting points. If using dash kit adapter, ensure it seats flush with dashboard contours. Secure radio using factory mounting bolts or hardware provided with installation kit to Module Mounting Bolts specification if reusing factory threads.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall center trim panelReconnect any electrical connectors to the center trim panel (hazard switch, climate controls). Align trim panel with dashboard and press firmly around all edges to engage retaining clips. Verify panel sits flush with no gaps and all clips are fully seated.
Reassembly
- Reconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification
- Reset power windows by rolling each window fully down then fully up and holding switch for 2 seconds
- Reset radio presets and clock settings
- Verify all dashboard functions operate normally including climate controls and hazard lights
Verification
- Turn ignition to ACC position and verify radio powers on with key position
- Test all audio sources: AM, FM, auxiliary input, USB, and Bluetooth if equipped
- Verify all speakers produce sound by adjusting fade and balance settings
- Check that radio faceplate is secure and all dashboard trim panels are properly seated with no rattles
- Confirm radio illumination dims properly with dashboard dimmer control
