Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent accidental starting
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently driven
- Take photos of cable routing from engine bay to transmission for reference
Procedure
- 1Remove center console trimUsing a trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver wrapped in cloth, carefully pry up the shifter bezel trim panel. Remove the cup holder assembly if necessary for access. Disconnect any electrical connectors for heated seat switches or power outlets. Remove cover screws securing the shifter boot and console trim.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 2Disconnect cable from shifter assemblyLocate the shift cable end attached to the shifter mechanism. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the retaining clip from the cable end ball socket. Rotate the cable end to disengage it from the shifter lever ball stud. Note the orientation of the cable for reassembly.⚠The retaining clip can spring off - control it carefully to avoid loss
- 3Remove cable bracket from shifter housingLocate the cable bracket bolts securing the cable housing to the shifter assembly base. Remove the cable bracket bolts and carefully work the cable grommet out of the shifter housing. Keep track of any washers or spacers.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 4Raise and support vehicleRaise the front of the vehicle using a floor jack and support on jack stands at the frame rails. Ensure vehicle is stable and secure before working underneath. Remove any belly pans or skid plates that obstruct access to the transmission.
- 5Locate and trace cable routingFrom underneath the vehicle, trace the shift cable from the firewall to the transmission. Note all cable retaining clips, brackets, and routing points along the frame and transmission tunnel. Remove any cable ties or clips securing the cable to the frame or transmission tunnel.
- 6Disconnect cable from transmission leverLocate the transmission shift lever on the driver's side of the transmission case. Remove the retaining clip from the cable end and disconnect the cable from the transmission shift lever ball stud. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the cable end off if needed.⚠Do not use excessive force on transmission lever as internal detent mechanism can be damaged
- 7Remove cable bracket from transmissionRemove the mounting bolts securing the cable bracket to the transmission housing. Note the position and orientation of the bracket for proper reinstallation. Carefully work the cable grommet out of the transmission bracket.Torque specMounting Bolts76 Nm (56 lb-ft)
- 8Remove cable from vehicleWorking from underneath, remove all remaining cable retaining clips and brackets along the cable path. Carefully pull the cable through the firewall grommet from the engine compartment side. Inspect the firewall grommet for damage and replace if cracked or torn.
- 9Install new cable at transmissionRoute the new shift cable along the same path as the original, ensuring it does not contact any hot exhaust components or sharp edges. Install the cable grommet into the transmission bracket and secure with mounting bolts. Connect the cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud and install the retaining clip.Torque specMounting Bolts76 Nm (56 lb-ft)
- 10Secure cable routing and install at firewallInstall all cable retaining clips and brackets along the frame and transmission tunnel in the original positions. Route the cable through the firewall grommet, ensuring a proper seal. Reinstall any belly pans or skid plates that were removed. Lower the vehicle from jack stands.
- 11Connect cable to shifter assemblyFrom inside the vehicle, install the cable bracket to the shifter housing with cable bracket bolts. Connect the cable end to the shifter lever ball stud and install the retaining clip. Ensure the cable moves freely without binding.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 12Adjust cable tensionWith the transmission in PARK and shifter in PARK position, locate the adjustment mechanism at the transmission end of the cable. Loosen the adjustment nut and adjust cable tension so there is slight resistance but no binding. The shifter should move smoothly through all gear positions. Tighten the adjustment nut once proper adjustment is achieved.ℹ️Proper adjustment is critical for accurate gear selection and shift interlock functionTorque specAdjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall console trimReinstall the shifter boot and console trim components. Reconnect any electrical connectors for heated seats or power outlets. Install and torque cover screws. Snap the shifter bezel trim panel back into place, ensuring all clips are fully seated.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reconnect negative battery terminal
- Ensure all interior trim panels are properly secured and aligned
- Verify no tools or parts were left in engine compartment or under vehicle
Verification
- Start engine and verify shifter moves smoothly through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-M/S)
- Verify gear indicator in instrument cluster matches shifter position in all gears
- Confirm shift interlock prevents shifter from moving out of PARK without brake pedal depressed
- Test that key cannot be removed unless shifter is in PARK position
- Check that vehicle moves correctly in Drive and Reverse with no delayed engagement
- Verify parking pawl engages properly and holds vehicle on an incline in PARK
- Inspect cable routing underneath vehicle for proper clearance from exhaust and suspension components
