Parts
- Transmission shift linkage × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Shift cable bushing kit × 1 — Check for wear during removal
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake firmly
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support on safety stands at frame rails
- Verify vehicle is stable before working underneath
- Allow exhaust components to cool completely if vehicle was recently driven
- Spray linkage pivot points and fasteners with penetrating oil if corrosion is visible
Procedure
- 1Access shift linkage from underneathPosition yourself under the driver's side of the vehicle. Locate the transmission shift linkage assembly on the driver's side of the transmission near the transmission pan. The linkage connects the column shifter cable to the manual lever on the transmission. Use a work light to inspect the area and identify all connection points.
- 2Disconnect shift cable from linkageLocate the shift cable end at the transmission manual lever. Pry the cable retaining clip away from the ball socket using a flathead screwdriver. Once the clip is released, pull the cable end off the ball stud on the manual lever. Note the orientation of the cable routing for reinstallation.
- 3Remove linkage pivot boltLocate the pivot bolt that secures the shift linkage to the manual lever shaft on the transmission. Using the appropriate socket, remove the pivot bolt completely. Support the linkage assembly as you remove the bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specPivot Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect linkage from transmission mounting bracketIdentify the linkage bolts that secure the shift linkage bracket to the transmission case. Remove these bolts while supporting the linkage assembly. The linkage may have multiple attachment points depending on configuration.Torque specLinkage Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 5Remove shift linkage assemblyCarefully lower the shift linkage assembly away from the transmission. Maneuver it around any nearby components such as exhaust pipes, crossmembers, or wiring harnesses. Extract the linkage from underneath the vehicle.
- 6Inspect components for wearExamine the removed linkage for wear at pivot points, bent rods, or damaged bushings. Check the cable ball socket and retaining clip for cracks or excessive wear. Inspect the manual lever on the transmission for damage or excessive play. Replace any worn components including bushings from the bushing kit if necessary.
- 7Clean mounting surfacesUse a wire brush to clean the linkage mounting points on the transmission case and manual lever shaft. Remove any corrosion, old thread locker, or debris from bolt holes and mounting surfaces. Ensure all mating surfaces are clean and free of contaminants.
- 8Install new or serviced linkage assemblyPosition the shift linkage assembly up into place from underneath the vehicle. Align the linkage bracket with the mounting holes on the transmission case. Start all linkage bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement before tightening.
- 9Secure linkage bracket to transmissionInstall and torque the linkage bolts to specification using a torque wrench. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern if multiple bolts are present to ensure even seating of the bracket.Torque specLinkage Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 10Install pivot bolt to manual leverAlign the linkage with the manual lever shaft on the transmission. Insert the pivot bolt through the linkage and manual lever. Torque the pivot bolt to specification, ensuring the linkage can still move freely without binding.Torque specPivot Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect shift cable to linkageRoute the shift cable to the manual lever following the original path documented during disassembly. Press the cable end ball socket firmly onto the ball stud on the manual lever until it seats completely. Install the retaining clip to secure the cable connection. Verify the clip is fully engaged.
- 12Verify linkage operationFrom inside the vehicle cabin, move the column shifter through all gear positions (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and lower gears). Observe the manual lever at the transmission to confirm it moves through the full range of motion smoothly without binding or hesitation. Ensure the shifter returns to each detent position positively.
Reassembly
- Double-check all fasteners are torqued to specification
- Verify shift cable retaining clip is fully seated and secure
- Ensure no tools or parts were left under the vehicle
- Lower vehicle from safety stands carefully
Verification
- With engine off and parking brake engaged, cycle the shifter through all gear positions multiple times to verify smooth operation
- Start the engine and verify it only starts in Park and Neutral positions
- With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions and confirm transmission engages each gear properly without slipping or delay
- Verify shift indicator on instrument cluster matches the selected gear position accurately
- Test drive the vehicle and confirm all gear changes occur smoothly and the shifter does not feel loose or sloppy
- After test drive, inspect linkage connections from underneath for any looseness or movement
