This procedure covers removal and replacement of the dashboard-mounted speaker in a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with 5.0L Coyote V8 engine.

Parts

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Allow dashboard to cool if vehicle has been in sun or recently driven
  4. Identify which dashboard speaker requires replacement (driver or passenger side)

Procedure

    Disconnect battery negative terminal
    Using appropriate socket, loosen and remove the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove negative cable from battery post and secure away from terminal to prevent accidental reconnection during work.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

    Remove speaker grille
    Locate the dashboard speaker grille on top of the dashboard (either driver or passenger side near windshield). Using panel removal tool, carefully pry up the speaker grille starting at the rear edge. Work around perimeter to release all retaining clips. Lift grille away from dashboard and set aside.

    Disconnect speaker electrical connector
    Locate the speaker electrical connector attached to the back of the speaker. Press the connector release tab and pull connector straight off speaker terminals. Note connector orientation for reassembly.

    Remove speaker mounting screws
    Using T20 Torx driver, remove the three screws securing the speaker to the dashboard mounting bracket. Support speaker with one hand while removing final screw to prevent it from falling into dashboard cavity.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)

    Remove speaker from dashboard
    Carefully lift speaker assembly straight up and out of dashboard opening. Inspect mounting area for any debris or damage to mounting bracket. Clean mounting surface if necessary.

    Install new speaker
    Position new speaker in dashboard opening, aligning mounting holes with bracket. Ensure speaker is seated flush against mounting surface. Hand-start all three mounting screws before tightening to ensure proper alignment.

    Cover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)

    Reconnect speaker electrical connector
    Connect electrical connector to speaker terminals, ensuring proper orientation. Press firmly until connector clicks into place and is fully seated. Gently tug on connector to verify secure connection.

    Reinstall speaker grille
    Position speaker grille over speaker opening, aligning all clips with corresponding holes in dashboard. Press firmly around entire perimeter until all clips fully engage and grille sits flush with dashboard surface.

    Reconnect battery
    Reinstall negative battery cable to battery post. Tighten battery terminal bolt to specification. Ensure connection is secure but do not overtighten.

Reassembly

  1. Verify speaker grille is fully seated and flush with dashboard surface
  2. Check that all clips are properly engaged with no gaps visible
  3. Reset radio presets and clock after battery reconnection

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
  • Turn on radio and select speaker fade/balance settings to test repaired speaker independently
  • Play audio through all speakers at various volume levels to verify proper operation
  • Test speaker at different frequencies (bass, midrange, treble) to ensure full range function
  • Listen for rattles, distortion, or other abnormal sounds from speaker area
  • Verify speaker grille is secure and does not rattle during test
