This procedure covers removal and installation of the steering wheel on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, including proper airbag handling and clockspring alignment.

Warnings

⚠️Wait at least 60 seconds after disconnecting the battery before handling airbag components to allow capacitors to discharge. Failure to do so can result in airbag deployment and serious injury.
⚠️Never use impact tools on airbag module fasteners. Always use hand tools only.
The clockspring must be properly centered before reinstalling the steering wheel. Incorrect alignment will cause premature clockspring failure and airbag malfunction.
Store airbag module with cover facing upward on a clean, flat surface away from work area. Never place anything on top of the airbag.
ℹ️Wheels must be in straight-ahead position throughout this procedure to maintain clockspring alignment.

Parts

  • Steering wheel (if replacing) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering wheel nut (recommended new) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface with wheels pointed straight ahead
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 60 seconds before proceeding
  4. Mark the relationship between steering wheel and steering column with masking tape or paint pen for proper alignment during reinstallation

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access airbag module fasteners
Insert a trim removal tool or small flat-blade screwdriver into the access holes on both sides of the steering wheel (behind the wheel rim). Push the spring clips to release the airbag module from the steering wheel. The access holes are located at approximately 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions on the back of the wheel.
  2. 2
    Remove airbag module
Carefully pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel. Locate the two electrical connectors on the back of the airbag module: the airbag connector (yellow) and horn connector (if equipped). Press the locking tabs and disconnect both connectors. Remove the airbag module from the vehicle.
Handle airbag module by the sides only. Never carry by the wires or connectors.
  3. 3
Disconnect cruise control and audio controls
Locate the electrical connectors for the cruise control switches and audio control switches on the back of the steering wheel. Press the locking tabs and disconnect all connectors. Note the routing of the wiring for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Mark clockspring position
Before removing the steering wheel, mark the position of the clockspring relative to the steering wheel and column with masking tape or a paint pen. This ensures proper alignment during reinstallation. Verify wheels are still pointed straight ahead.
  5. 5
    Remove steering wheel retaining nut
Using a 19mm socket and ratchet, remove the steering wheel retaining nut. Do not discard the nut if reusing, but a new nut is recommended for reassembly. Note: Do not turn the steering column shaft while the wheel is removed.

  6. 6
    Remove steering wheel
Grasp the steering wheel firmly at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions and pull straight back toward yourself with steady pressure. If the wheel does not release, use a steering wheel puller designed for airbag-equipped vehicles. Never strike the steering wheel or column shaft with a hammer. Once loose, lift the steering wheel off the column shaft while carefully threading the clockspring connector through the wheel center.
Do not allow the clockspring to rotate while the steering wheel is removed. If the clockspring rotates, it must be re-centered before installation.
  7. 7
    Inspect clockspring and column
With the steering wheel removed, inspect the clockspring for any damage, unusual wear, or broken wiring. Verify the clockspring locking tab is engaged to prevent rotation. Inspect the steering column shaft splines for damage or wear. If replacing the steering wheel, transfer all components to the new wheel.
  8. 8
    Install steering wheel
If clockspring became unlocked or rotated, center it according to service manual procedures before proceeding. Thread the clockspring connector through the center of the steering wheel. Align the steering wheel with the alignment marks made during disassembly and the flat on the column shaft. Push the steering wheel onto the column shaft until it seats completely. Verify the wheel is aligned with the straight-ahead position of the front wheels.
  9. 9
Install and torque steering wheel nut
Install a new (or cleaned original) steering wheel retaining nut. Using a torque wrench and 19mm socket, torque the nut to specification in a smooth, continuous motion. Do not use impact tools.

  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connections
Route the cruise control and audio control switch wiring as noted during disassembly. Connect all electrical connectors to their respective switches, ensuring each connector clicks and locks securely. Tug gently on each connector to verify engagement.
  11. 11
    Install airbag module
Connect the horn connector (if equipped) and the yellow airbag connector to the back of the airbag module. Ensure both connectors are fully seated and locked. Position the airbag module onto the steering wheel, aligning the mounting points. Push firmly until both spring clips audibly click into place on both sides of the wheel.
⚠️Ensure all airbag connectors are fully locked before installing module. Improper connection can prevent airbag deployment in a crash.

    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. Verify the airbag warning light illuminates for approximately 6 seconds then goes out, indicating proper system operation. Test all steering wheel controls including horn, cruise control, and audio buttons for proper function.

Reassembly

  1. Torque all fasteners to specifications using a calibrated torque wrench
  2. Ensure steering wheel is centered with front wheels in straight-ahead position
  3. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  4. Confirm airbag module is securely clipped on both sides with no gaps

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify the airbag warning light functions normally (illuminates briefly then extinguishes)
  • Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary to verify no unusual noises or binding from the clockspring
  • Test horn operation by pressing the horn button
  • Test all steering wheel-mounted controls (cruise control, audio, phone buttons) for proper operation
  • If airbag light remains illuminated, retrieve diagnostic trouble codes before driving vehicle
  • Verify steering wheel is centered when driving straight ahead
