This procedure covers removal and replacement of the front sway bar (stabilizer bar) on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 4WD with 5.0L V8 engine, including disconnecting end links and removing mounting brackets.
Warnings

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Raise front of vehicle and support on jack stands at frame rails behind front wheels
- Remove both front wheels for easier access
- Spray all sway bar link nuts and bracket bolts with penetrating oil if rusty, allow 10-15 minutes to soak
Procedure
- 1Disconnect driver side sway bar end linkLocate the sway bar end link connecting the sway bar to the lower control arm. Insert a 6mm Allen key into the top of the end link stud to hold it stationary. Using a 15mm wrench, remove the upper nut connecting the end link to the sway bar. If the stud spins, hold it firmly with the Allen key while loosening the nut.
- 2Disconnect passenger side sway bar end linkRepeat the same process on the passenger side. Insert the 6mm Allen key into the end link stud and remove the upper nut with a 15mm wrench. Once both end links are disconnected from the sway bar, allow them to hang from the lower control arms.
- 3Remove driver side sway bar bracketLocate the sway bar mounting bracket bolted to the front subframe. There are typically two bolts per bracket. Remove both bolts securing the driver side bracket to the frame. Note the orientation of the bracket and bushing for reinstallation.
- 4Remove passenger side sway bar bracketRemove both bolts securing the passenger side bracket to the frame. Keep brackets and hardware organized. The sway bar should now be free from the vehicle.
- 5Remove sway bar from vehicleCarefully maneuver the sway bar out from under the vehicle. It may require rotating or angling to clear the subframe, suspension components, and steering linkage. Remove the bushings from the old bar and inspect them for wear, cracking, or deterioration.
- 6Prepare new sway barIf bushings are reusable and in good condition, transfer them to the new sway bar. If using new bushings, install them onto the bar in the correct orientation - the split in the bushing should face toward the rear of the vehicle. Ensure bushings are positioned at the correct locations to align with mounting brackets.
- 7Install sway bar into positionManeuver the new sway bar into position under the vehicle, routing it through the suspension and steering components. Align the bushings with the mounting locations on the subframe. The bar ends should be positioned near the end link mounting points on both sides.
- 8Install sway bar bracketsPosition the mounting brackets over the bushings on both sides. Ensure the bushing split faces rearward and the bracket seats properly. Start all four bracket bolts by hand before tightening any of them. - 9Connect sway bar end linksRaise each end of the sway bar to align with the end link studs. Install the upper nuts onto both end link studs. - 10Final inspection and wheel installationVisually inspect all connections to ensure brackets are secure and end links are properly attached. Check that no wiring, brake lines, or other components are contacting or routed incorrectly around the sway bar. Reinstall both front wheels and torque lug nuts to specification (use vehicle-specific torque value, typically 150 lb-ft for F-150).
Reassembly
- Lower vehicle carefully from jack stands once wheels are installed
- Perform final torque check on all sway bar bracket bolts and end link nuts with vehicle on the ground
- Test drive vehicle at low speed to verify no unusual noises or handling issues
Verification
- Bounce each corner of the front end - should feel normal with no clunking sounds
- Visually inspect all bolts and nuts are tight with no gaps in brackets or bushings
- Test drive on a bumpy road and through turns - sway bar should reduce body roll without noise
- Re-check torque on all fasteners after 50-100 miles of driving
