Parts
- Tail light bulb (3157 or 3157K type depending on position) × 1 — Ford W713157-S300 or equivalent
Preparation
- Verify which specific bulb has failed (brake, turn signal, or reverse light)
- Purchase correct replacement bulb - tail/brake uses 3157K, turn signal uses 3157
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
- Lower tailgate for easier access to tail light assembly
Procedure
- 1Access tail light assembly from inside bedFrom inside the truck bed, locate the tail light assembly. You will see two 7mm nuts securing the assembly from the inside of the bed. These are accessible without removing any trim panels on 2011-2014 F-150 models.
- 2Remove mounting nutsUsing a 7mm socket or nut driver, remove both 7mm nuts securing the tail light assembly to the bed. Keep these nuts in a safe location as they will be reused during reassembly.
- 3Pull assembly from bedCarefully pull the tail light assembly straight out from the outside of the truck bed. The assembly is held by the two mounting studs and a clip at the rear. Apply steady pressure and it will release. You may need to gently wiggle the assembly while pulling.
- 4Disconnect wiring harnessLocate the wiring harness connector on the back of the tail light assembly. Press the release tab on the connector and pull straight apart to disconnect. Support the assembly to prevent it from falling.
- 5Remove bulb socketIdentify the correct bulb socket for the failed bulb. Turn the socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull straight out from the tail light assembly housing. The socket will release from the housing.
- 6Replace bulbRemove the old bulb by pulling straight out of the socket (it is a push-in type, not a twist). Using a clean cloth or gloves, insert the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats completely. Verify the bulb is fully seated and contacts are clean.
- 7Test bulb operationBefore reassembly, reconnect the wiring harness to the tail light assembly. Have an assistant operate the lights (brake, turn signal, or reverse as applicable) to verify the new bulb illuminates properly. If bulb does not work, verify proper bulb type and socket connection.
- 8Reinstall bulb socketInsert the bulb socket back into the tail light assembly housing and turn clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Ensure the socket is fully seated and secure.
- 9Reinstall tail light assemblyWith wiring harness still connected, align the tail light assembly with the mounting holes and guide the two studs through the bed. Ensure the rear clip engages properly. Push firmly until the assembly is flush with the bed exterior.
- 10Secure mounting nutsFrom inside the bed, thread both 7mm nuts onto the mounting studs by hand, then tighten securely with the 7mm socket. Tighten evenly but do not over-torque as you may crack the housing.
Reassembly
- Ensure tail light assembly is flush with bed body and all mounting hardware is tight
- Verify wiring harness has adequate slack and is not pinched between assembly and bed
- Close tailgate and verify it does not contact or interfere with tail light assembly
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify tail lights illuminate
- Have assistant press brake pedal while you verify brake lights function on both sides
- Activate turn signals and verify proper operation on repaired side
- Shift into reverse and verify reverse lights illuminate if that bulb was replaced
- Inspect tail light assembly for proper seating and alignment with body panel
