This procedure relearns the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 5.0L V8 4WD after tire rotation, sensor replacement, or pressure adjustments.

Warnings

ℹ️TPMS sensors must be functioning and have adequate battery life for relearn to succeed
Tire pressures must be set to the correct specification on the door jamb label before beginning relearn

Tools required

TPMS relearn tool or OBD-II scan tool with TPMS functionEssential
Tire pressure gaugeEssential
Air compressor

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
  2. Locate the tire pressure specification label on the driver's door jamb
  3. Adjust all four tire pressures to the exact specification listed on the door jamb (typically 35 PSI front and rear, but verify)
  4. Ensure vehicle has been stationary for at least 2 minutes with ignition off
  5. Have TPMS relearn tool or scan tool ready and powered on

Procedure

  1. 1
    Enter TPMS relearn mode
Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off). Press and release the brake pedal. Turn the ignition to OFF, then back to ON three times, ending in the ON position. Press and release the brake pedal again. Turn the ignition to OFF. The TPMS indicator light should flash, indicating the vehicle is in relearn mode. If using a scan tool, navigate to the TPMS relearn function and initiate the relearn sequence.
  2. 2
    Activate left front sensor
Starting with the left front tire, place the TPMS relearn tool against the tire sidewall near the valve stem. Press the button to activate the sensor. The horn will chirp once to confirm the sensor has been recognized. If using a scan tool method, deflate the tire by approximately 10 PSI and wait for the horn chirp, then re-inflate to specification.
  3. 3
    Activate right front sensor
Move to the right front tire and repeat the activation process. Place the TPMS tool against the sidewall near the valve stem and activate. Wait for the horn chirp confirmation before proceeding to the next tire.
  4. 4
    Activate right rear sensor
Move to the right rear tire and activate the sensor using the same method. Ensure you hear the horn chirp confirming the sensor has been learned before moving to the final tire.
  5. 5
    Activate left rear sensor
Move to the left rear tire and activate the final sensor. After the horn chirps for this tire, the TPMS warning light should turn off, indicating successful completion of the relearn procedure.
  6. 6
    Exit relearn mode and verify
Turn the ignition to OFF, then start the engine. The TPMS warning light should illuminate briefly during start-up, then turn off. If the light remains on or flashes, the relearn was unsuccessful and must be repeated. Drive the vehicle above 20 MPH for at least 2 minutes to allow the system to fully initialize.

Reassembly

  1. No reassembly required for TPMS relearn procedure

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify the TPMS warning light turns off after the initial bulb check
  • Drive the vehicle above 20 MPH for 2-5 minutes to confirm all sensors are communicating properly
  • Use a scan tool to verify all four sensor IDs are stored in the vehicle's TPMS control module
  • Check that tire pressure readings display correctly on the instrument cluster or scan tool
  • Verify no TPMS diagnostic trouble codes are present
