Procedure
- 1Remove Engine Air Intake SystemDisconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector. Release the air box clips on both sides of the air filter housing. Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body and remove the entire air intake tube assembly. Remove the air filter housing cover and extract the old air filter element. Inspect housing for debris or contamination.Torque specAir Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove Ignition CoilsStarting with cylinder 1 (passenger side front), disconnect the electrical connector from each ignition coil by pressing the release tab and pulling straight up. Remove the single bolt securing each coil using a 7mm socket. Carefully pull each coil straight up with a slight twisting motion to break the seal. Mark or photograph coil positions if they are not identical. Inspect coil boots for cracks or carbon tracking.Torque specMounting Bolts34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
- 3Remove and Inspect Spark PlugsUse compressed air or a clean rag to remove debris from around each spark plug well before removal. Using a 5/8" spark plug socket with extension, carefully remove each spark plug. Inspect old plugs for wear patterns, electrode erosion, and proper gap wear. Note any unusual conditions (oil fouling, excessive carbon, etc.) which may indicate other engine issues. Keep plugs organized by cylinder if diagnosis is needed.⚠Do not allow debris to fall into spark plug holes. Foreign material can cause catastrophic engine damage.
- 4Install New Spark PlugsVerify new spark plugs are gapped to 0.051-0.057 inches. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads (avoid getting any on the electrode). Thread each plug by hand into the cylinder head to prevent cross-threading. Torque plugs to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) using the spark plug socket and torque wrench. Do not over-torque as the cylinder heads are aluminum.⚠Cross-threading spark plugs in aluminum heads will require costly head repair. Always start threads by hand.
- 5Install New Ignition CoilsApply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the inside of each new coil boot. Align each coil with its spark plug and press down firmly until fully seated. Install the mounting bolt for each coil and torque to specification. Reconnect each electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Verify each coil is properly seated and secured before moving to the next cylinder.Torque specMounting Bolts34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
- 6Replace PCV ValveLocate the PCV valve on the passenger side valve cover, integrated into the valley cover. Disconnect the hose from the PCV valve by squeezing the quick-connect fitting. Twist and pull the old PCV valve from its grommet. Install the new PCV valve by pushing firmly into the grommet until seated. Reconnect the hose, ensuring the quick-connect clicks into place.ℹ️A failed PCV valve can cause rough idle, increased oil consumption, and poor emissions performance.
- 7Clean Throttle BodyWith the air intake removed, the throttle body is accessible. Spray throttle body cleaner onto a clean shop towel (never spray directly into throttle body with engine off). Wipe the throttle plate and bore clean, removing all carbon deposits. Manually open the throttle plate slightly to clean behind it. Use additional clean towels to remove all residue. Allow to air dry completely before reassembly.⚠Do not force the throttle plate open beyond its normal range of motion. The electronic throttle control is delicate.
- 8Install New Engine Air FilterWipe out the air filter housing with a clean towel to remove any debris. Install the new air filter element, ensuring it is properly seated in the housing with the arrow or "UP" marking facing the correct direction. Replace the housing cover and secure all air box clips. Reconnect the intake tube to the throttle body and tighten the hose clamp securely. Reconnect the mass airflow sensor connector.Torque specAir Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 9Replace Cabin Air FilterOpen the glove box and remove contents. Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward to release the stops and lower it fully. Remove the cabin air filter access door by pressing the release tabs. Slide out the old cabin air filter, noting the airflow direction arrow. Install the new filter with the arrow pointing in the same direction (toward the rear of vehicle). Replace the access door and return the glove box to normal position.
- 10Drain Engine OilPosition the oil drain pan beneath the oil drain plug on the passenger side of the oil pan. Using a 15mm socket, loosen and remove the drain plug. Allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10-15 minutes). Inspect the drain plug threads and sealing surface for damage. Discard the old crush washer. Clean the drain plug and install a new crush washer. Thread the drain plug by hand, then torque to specification.⚠Used engine oil may be hot and can cause burns. Wear appropriate gloves and avoid skin contact.Torque specOil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- 11Replace Oil FilterMove the drain pan beneath the oil filter location (front passenger side of engine, above the frame rail). Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old oil filter. Allow residual oil to drain. Clean the filter mounting surface on the engine block with a clean towel. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the gasket of the new filter. Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use a wrench to install.ℹ️Over-tightening the oil filter can damage the gasket and cause leaks. Hand-tight plus 3/4 turn is correct.
- 12Refill Engine OilUsing a funnel, add 7.0 quarts of Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend oil through the oil filler cap on the driver side valve cover. Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle, then check the dipstick. Add the remaining 0.5 quarts gradually to bring the level to the MAX mark. Do not overfill. Install the oil filler cap securely.⚠Overfilling engine oil can cause foaming, loss of oil pressure, and catalytic converter damage. Maintain proper level.
- 13Reconnect Battery and Install Engine CoverReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Align the engine cover with the grommets on the valve covers and engine. Press down firmly until all grommets are seated and the cover is secure.
