Replace the water pump on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, requiring coolant drain, accessory belt removal, and front engine cover access.
Warnings
⚠️Never open cooling system when engine is hot. Allow minimum 2 hours cooling time to prevent severe burns from pressurized coolant.
⚠The 5.0L Coyote water pump is internally mounted and requires partial timing cover removal. Improper installation can cause catastrophic engine damage.
⚠Do not use standard green coolant. This engine requires Motorcraft Orange coolant (yellow-gold color) or equivalent meeting Ford WSS-M97B44-D2 specification.
ℹ️Take photos of accessory belt routing before removal. Belt routing is complex on this engine.

Parts
- Water pump assembly × 1 — Motorcraft PW-511 or equivalent
- Water pump gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Accessory drive belt × 1 — Replace if worn or cracked
- Coolant hose clamps × 2 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Motorcraft Orange Coolant — 16 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold (minimum 2 hours after last operation)
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental fan operation
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
- Remove engine splash shield/skid plate if equipped
- Place drain pan under radiator petcock
- Document accessory belt routing with photo or diagram
Procedure
- 1Drain cooling systemRemove radiator cap slowly to release residual pressure. Open radiator petcock at bottom of radiator and drain coolant into collection pan. Remove upper radiator hose at thermostat housing to improve drainage. Dispose of coolant properly per local regulations.
- 2Remove accessory drive beltLocate belt tensioner on right side of engine. Insert 3/8" breaker bar or belt tensioner tool into tensioner square hole. Rotate tensioner clockwise to release tension and remove belt from pulleys. Slowly release tensioner. Inspect belt for cracks, glazing, or fraying and replace if necessary.
- 3Remove fan shroud and cooling fanRemove upper radiator mounting bolts. Remove fan shroud mounting bolts and carefully lift shroud upward to clear fan assembly. If equipped with mechanical fan, use fan clutch wrench to remove fan/clutch assembly (reverse thread - turn clockwise to loosen). If electric fan, disconnect electrical connector and remove mounting bolts. Set fan assembly aside safely.
- 4Remove upper timing cover boltsThe water pump is mounted behind the timing cover on the Coyote engine. Remove the upper timing cover bolts that provide access to the water pump. You do not need to remove the entire timing cover. Remove approximately 8-10 upper bolts to allow timing cover to flex away from water pump area. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.
- 5Disconnect water pump hosesUsing hose clamp pliers or screwdriver, loosen and reposition clamps on water pump inlet and outlet hoses. Remove hoses from water pump connections. Have rags ready as residual coolant will drain. If hoses are stuck, carefully twist while pulling - do not pry against pump housing.
- 6Remove water pump mounting boltsThe 5.0L Coyote water pump is secured with 4 bolts accessible from the front. Using appropriate socket and extensions, remove all four water pump mounting bolts. Bolts may be of different lengths - keep track of bolt locations. Support water pump while removing final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specWater Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 7Remove water pumpCarefully work water pump away from engine block. It may be sealed with gasket and RTV. Use plastic pry tool if needed but do not damage sealing surfaces on block. Once free, remove pump and old gasket completely. Expect additional coolant drainage.
- 8Clean mounting surfacesThoroughly clean water pump mounting surface on engine block using gasket scraper and wire brush. Remove all old gasket material and RTV residue. Surface must be completely clean and smooth for proper seal. Wipe clean with lint-free cloth and brake cleaner. Inspect for deep scratches or corrosion that could prevent proper seal.
- 9Install new water pumpInstall new gasket on water pump or apply thin bead of RTV silicone to pump mounting surface per gasket manufacturer instructions. If using RTV, apply continuous 2-3mm bead around all bolt holes and sealing surface. Position new water pump carefully, aligning bolt holes. Start all four mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper alignment before tightening.⚠Tighten water pump bolts in criss-cross pattern to specified torque. Uneven tightening can warp pump housing and cause immediate failure or leaks.Torque specWater Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall water pump hosesReconnect inlet and outlet hoses to water pump. Ensure hoses are fully seated on pump connections. Position hose clamps over hose ends and tighten securely. Verify clamps are positioned properly to prevent hose separation under pressure.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall timing cover boltsReinstall upper timing cover bolts that were removed for water pump access. Tighten bolts in sequence starting from center and working outward to ensure even cover seating. Verify timing cover is properly aligned before final torquing.
- 12Reinstall cooling fan and shroudReinstall cooling fan assembly (reverse of removal - mechanical fan turns counterclockwise to tighten if equipped, or reconnect electrical connector for electric fan). Position fan shroud over fan and install mounting bolts. Install upper radiator mounting bolts. Verify fan rotates freely without contacting shroud.
- 13Install accessory drive beltRoute new or existing accessory belt per routing diagram photographed during removal. Ensure belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves. Rotate tensioner clockwise and position belt over final pulley (typically tensioner pulley). Release tensioner slowly to apply proper tension. Double-check belt alignment on all pulleys.
- 14Refill cooling systemClose radiator petcock. Reinstall upper radiator hose if removed. Using coolant funnel with adapter on radiator or expansion tank, add Motorcraft Orange coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. Fill until coolant appears at radiator neck. Reconnect negative battery cable. Start engine and allow to warm to operating temperature with heater on high. Add coolant as level drops while air purges. Monitor for leaks around water pump.
Reassembly
- Install engine splash shield/skid plate if removed
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- After initial warm-up cycle, recheck coolant level when engine is cold and top off as needed
- Inspect water pump area and hose connections for leaks after first drive cycle
Verification
- Start engine and verify no coolant leaks from water pump, hoses, or timing cover area
- Confirm engine reaches normal operating temperature (approximately 195-220°F) without overheating
- Verify heater produces hot air indicating proper coolant circulation
- Check coolant level in overflow tank when cold - should be between MIN and MAX marks
- Listen for unusual noises from water pump bearing - should operate silently
- After 50-100 miles of driving, recheck coolant level and inspect for any seepage around pump gasket
