Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before working near headlight assembly to avoid burns from hot engine components
⚠Never touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare hands as skin oils will cause premature failure and potential bulb explosion
ℹ️Verify which bulb (low beam or high beam) needs replacement before purchasing parts
Tools required
Flathead screwdriver
Clean lint-free gloves or clothEssential
Torque wrench
Parts
- H11 halogen headlight bulb (low beam) or 9005 bulb (high beam) × 1 — Use OEM specification or verify bulb type for your specific headlight
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off engine
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated
- Open hood and secure with hood prop
- Identify which headlight bulb needs replacement (driver or passenger side, low or high beam)
Procedure
- 1Access the headlight assembly rear coverLocate the rear of the headlight assembly from inside the engine bay. On the 3.5L EcoBoost, you may need to move aside the air intake tube slightly for better access on the driver side. Identify the bulb access cover corresponding to the failed bulb (low beam is typically the larger outer cover, high beam is the inner position).
- 2Remove the bulb access coverRotate the bulb access cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight back away from the headlight housing. The cover is a weatherproof dust cap that protects the bulb socket. Set the cover aside in a clean location.
- 3Disconnect the electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the rear of the bulb socket. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight back to disconnect it from the bulb. Note the orientation for reinstallation.
- 4Remove the bulb retaining ringLocate the wire retaining clip or ring that secures the bulb in the reflector housing. Press the clip inward slightly and rotate or unhook it to release tension. Swing the retaining ring away from the bulb base to allow bulb removal.Torque specBulb Retaining Ring5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 5Extract the old bulbCarefully pull the bulb straight out from the reflector housing. Avoid twisting or forcing the bulb. Inspect the bulb socket and reflector housing for any signs of moisture, corrosion, or damage. Clean if necessary with electrical contact cleaner.
- 6Install the new bulbPut on clean gloves or use a lint-free cloth to handle the new bulb. Without touching the glass envelope, align the bulb base tabs with the slots in the reflector housing and insert the bulb straight in until it seats completely. Ensure the bulb is fully seated against the housing.
- 7Secure the bulb retaining ringSwing the wire retaining ring back over the bulb base and engage it into its locking position. The ring should click or snap into place securely, holding the bulb firmly against the reflector. Verify the bulb cannot move or rattle.Torque specBulb Retaining Ring5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect the electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the bulb terminals until you hear or feel it click into place. Ensure the connection is secure and the connector cannot be pulled off easily. Verify proper seating of the weather seal.
- 9Reinstall the bulb access coverAlign the tabs on the dust cover with the slots on the headlight housing. Press the cover against the housing and rotate it clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Ensure the weatherproof seal is properly seated.
Reassembly
- Return any displaced components such as air intake tubing to their original positions
- Ensure all wiring is clear of moving parts and hot surfaces
- Close the hood securely
Verification
- Start the vehicle and turn on the headlights to verify the new bulb illuminates properly
- Test both low and high beam functions using the headlight switch
- Walk around the front of the vehicle to confirm proper light output and aim appears correct
- Check that no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster indicating headlight malfunction
- Verify the bulb access cover is properly sealed to prevent moisture intrusion
