This procedure covers the replacement of the dimmer switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column, which controls headlight high/low beam, turn signals, and windshield wipers.

Warnings

Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes before starting work to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
Do not turn ignition key or attempt to start vehicle with battery disconnected and steering column components removed, as this may set fault codes
ℹ️Ensure wheels are pointed straight ahead before beginning work to maintain proper steering wheel alignment

Parts

  • Multifunction switch (dimmer switch assembly) × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
  • Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — As needed

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface with wheels pointed straight ahead
  2. Place transmission in Park and engage parking brake
  3. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
  5. Wait minimum 5 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
  6. Adjust steering column to lowest tilt position for best access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column cover
Locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the two T20 Torx screws on the underside of the lower cover. Carefully pull the lower cover downward and away from the column, releasing the retaining clips. Set cover aside.
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
Identify the upper steering column cover that surrounds the top portion of the column. Remove the two T20 Torx screws located at the rear bottom edge of the upper cover. Gently lift and pull the upper cover upward to disengage the clips at the front. Remove cover completely and set aside.
  3. 3
    Disconnect wiper/washer switch connector
Locate the electrical connector on the right side of the multifunction switch (wiper/washer side). Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out from the switch housing. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reassembly.
  4. 4
    Disconnect turn signal/dimmer switch connector
Locate the electrical connector on the left side of the multifunction switch (turn signal/dimmer side). Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the connector from the switch assembly. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.
  5. 5
    Remove multifunction switch mounting screws
Locate the two T30 Torx mounting screws that secure the multifunction switch assembly to the steering column. These screws are typically located at the top and bottom of the switch housing. Remove both screws completely and retain for reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Remove multifunction switch assembly
With mounting screws removed, carefully slide the entire multifunction switch assembly off the steering column shaft. The switch should slide straight back toward the driver's seat. If resistance is felt, verify all screws and connectors have been removed. Do not force the assembly.
  7. 7
    Inspect steering column and connections
With the old switch removed, inspect the steering column shaft and wiring connector pins for damage, corrosion, or wear. Clean the column shaft area with a lint-free cloth. Spray electrical contact cleaner into the harness connectors and allow to dry if any corrosion is present.
  8. 8
    Install new multifunction switch
Position the new multifunction switch assembly over the steering column shaft. Ensure the alignment tab on the switch housing matches the slot in the column. Slide the switch forward onto the column until it seats fully against the mounting surface. Verify the switch moves freely through its range of motion.
  9. 9
    Install mounting screws
Insert the two T30 Torx mounting screws through the switch housing into the steering column. Start both screws by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten screws evenly in a cross pattern to secure the switch assembly. Do not overtighten as this may crack the plastic housing.
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect the turn signal/dimmer connector to the left side of the switch, ensuring it clicks into place. Reconnect the wiper/washer connector to the right side of the switch, verifying the locking tab engages. Gently tug on each connector to confirm secure connection. Route wiring harness in original position.
  11. 11
    Reinstall upper steering column cover
Position the upper steering column cover over the column, aligning the front clips first. Press down firmly at the front to engage clips, then lower the rear portion. Install the two T20 Torx screws at the rear bottom edge and tighten securely.

    Reinstall lower steering column cover
Position the lower steering column cover beneath the column, engaging the front clips first. Press upward firmly until all clips snap into place. Install the two T20 Torx screws on the underside of the cover and tighten securely.

  13. 13
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal to the battery post. Tighten the terminal bolt to specification, ensuring a clean, secure connection. Do not overtighten as this may damage the terminal or battery post.

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all steering column covers are properly seated and secured with no gaps
  2. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully engaged with locking tabs clicked into place
  3. Check that no wiring is pinched between column covers or steering components
  4. Confirm battery terminal is tight and corrosion-free

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine) and verify instrument cluster illuminates without warning lights related to multifunction switch
  • Test turn signal operation in both left and right directions, confirming indicator lights function properly
  • Test high beam/low beam dimmer function by pulling switch toward steering wheel, verifying blue high beam indicator illuminates
  • Test windshield wiper operation in all speed settings (intermittent, low, high) and verify washer function
  • Cycle hazard lights to confirm proper operation
  • Start engine and verify all switch functions operate correctly under running conditions
  • Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have been set during battery disconnection using scan tool if available
