Replace the brake light switch located on the brake pedal assembly to restore proper brake light and cruise control function.
Warnings
⚠️Brake lights are critical for preventing rear-end collisions. If you are uncertain about any step, have this repair performed by a qualified technician.
⚠️Improperly installed brake light switch can prevent brake lights from functioning or cause lights to stay on continuously, draining the battery and creating a fire hazard.
⚠The brake light switch also controls the brake-shift interlock and cruise control release. Incorrect installation will prevent shifting out of Park and disable cruise control.
⚠Work will be performed in tight quarters under the dashboard. Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground and will not roll.

Parts
- Brake light switch × 1 — Ford OEM BC3Z-13480-A or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake firmly
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from ignition
- Open driver's door fully to provide maximum access to pedal area
- If equipped, move the steering column to its lowest and furthest extended position for access
- Allow adequate time for any heated surfaces under dash to cool if vehicle was recently driven
Procedure
- 1Position yourself for accessLie on your back on the driver's floor with head and shoulders under the dashboard. Use a flashlight to locate the brake light switch, which is mounted on a bracket above the brake pedal arm. The switch has a plunger that contacts the brake pedal arm and an electrical connector.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the brake light switch body. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the switch. You may need to rotate the connector slightly while pulling. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
- 3Remove old brake light switchThe switch is retained by a twist-lock mechanism. Rotate the entire switch body counterclockwise approximately 30 degrees until it releases from the mounting bracket. Pull the switch straight out from the bracket. Note the position and orientation of the switch for installation of the new part.
- 4Inspect mounting bracket and pedal armExamine the mounting bracket for cracks or damage. Check the brake pedal arm contact surface where the switch plunger makes contact - it should be clean and smooth. Clean any dirt or debris from the mounting bracket opening using a clean cloth.
- 5Prepare new brake light switchRemove the new switch from packaging. Verify it matches the old switch design. Many Ford brake light switches come pre-adjusted with a locking tab or pin. Do not remove any shipping locks or pins until instructed - these allow the switch to self-adjust during installation.
- 6Install new switch into bracketAlign the new switch with the mounting bracket opening, ensuring the plunger faces the brake pedal arm. Push the switch straight into the bracket until it seats fully, then rotate clockwise approximately 30 degrees until it locks into place. You should feel and hear a positive click when properly engaged.
- 7Set switch adjustmentWith the brake pedal in the fully released (up) position, push the brake pedal rearward by hand to ensure full contact with the switch plunger. If the switch has a shipping lock or adjustment pin, remove it now by pulling it straight out. The switch will automatically adjust to the correct position. You should hear a clicking sound as the internal mechanism sets itself.
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the new switch until the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Ensure wiring is not pinched or stretched.
Reassembly
- Return steering column to driver's preferred position if it was adjusted
- Verify no tools or parts remain under dashboard before testing
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run). Verify brake lights are OFF with pedal released
- Have an assistant watch the rear brake lights or use a mirror. Press brake pedal and verify all three brake lights (left, right, and center high-mount) illuminate immediately
- Release brake pedal and verify all brake lights turn OFF immediately with no delay
- With engine running and foot on brake pedal, verify transmission shifter moves freely out of Park position
- Test that cruise control can be set and that pressing the brake pedal immediately cancels cruise control
- Verify brake lights turn OFF after releasing pedal - lights staying on indicate misadjustment or incorrect installation
- Test drive vehicle in a safe area to confirm brake lights function properly and cruise control operates as designed
- If brake lights do not function, do not operate vehicle on public roads until repaired
